Other any know problems with the gp1200r engines?

I'm looking to get another sitdown, I found a deal on a 2000 gp1200r. Other then the r-valve issue and the d-plate replacement is there any issues with the engines going bad? The thing has 98 hrs, I just want a ski to tool around on and not looking at it for the speed so I really won't be getting on the thing to hard. Should I look for something with a little less HP?

Zip tie should fix that right?

Not really zip ties are part of the problem, they need to have o-clips installed, be rerouted and have the plastic accordian covering cut back, powervalves also need to have retainers replaced to prevent them from dropping in the cylinders.

All of the stated problems apply in my experiance, AND the rear crank seals tend to push out of the cases sometimes as well as backfires burning the reeds. They are good machines for riding, if you like the bull riders seating feel. Not having reverse is a minor headache, too. You might find a Yam XLT or newer Venture for a deal that would be a more comfortable cruiser.

If it still has the cat, you must run Yamalube. The PVs can get gummed up resulting in failure. I know on the 03-04 PV 1300 motors, the actuator rods on the PVs can break dropping the PV deep enough into the cylinder for piston to valve contact. Should be the same issue on the 1200 motors I believe.

Pump tunnel needs reinforcing if you plan on riding rough surf... buy Cocos kit plus a lot of 5200. The 1300s are worse because they pulled a lot of weight out of the hull to try and remain competitive, particularly in 2003. I think they went a bit too light, making it crazy weak in the tunnel. The pump shoe literally rips out of the hull, sinking the ski in a matter of minutes.

The "bull riding" seating feel is the best way to describe it. I always was made fun of when I had my 03 by being accused of riding a fat chick. It takes a LONG time to get used to that if you are comfortable with other couches. The lack of reverse is only annoying if you're used to it. When I'd get made fun of for "riding a fat chick", I'd call all my RXP buddies sissies for owning a ski that has reverse. Now that I have an RXP, I am quite happy with my reverse, lol.

The best thing about the GPR, if you have the $$ when the 1200 gets tired, yank that junk out and do a RXP 4TEC conversion. My buddy just got his done and is running 86 mph with a full tank on a near stock 4TEC. Just a 2Rude blower, injectors, and ECU...that's IT! It'll run 100+ hours at WOT with those mods. The GPR is one of the most agile handling couches out there, and it's light. Throwing the blown 4TEC in it makes it the ultimate recreation ski hands down.
