Any luck with TL in surf with sealed coil

Wondering how many of you have any luck with a total loss system in salt or surf riding,when a aftermarket coil is used and in a waterproff case. I hear this makes it much less likly to have issues? It would be for my backup boat anyway,dont think id ever have enough confidence in a TL for my main ride.

I have heard good things so long as its boxed, and non-msd coils are used..

I used mine at daytona with no problems whatsoever. I have a JSS set up single channel digital msd, with a msd coil. Every wire connection is shrink wrapped and every plug connection was greased. Coil was not in a box.

I run mine in the surf almost every ride. I have the brain exposed as well as everything else.

The only things that can go wrong are the earth connections, shorts on the plugs/caps and shorts between the coils and mounting plate.

These problems can be overcome by using di-electric grease in the plug boots and making sure the leads aren't sitting against metal surfaces. Mount the brain on a perspex or fibreglass board so the coils can't arc against it, and make sure all your connections (especially the grounds) are good and solid.

The only other thing remaining is the trigger air gap and the front cover area, which is no different than stock.

Set it up properly and scoff at people without total loss!

I will 2nd what Lee said. I have had total loss for a year now with NO issues. (so far)LOL

All my connections are soldered, 1211'ed, and heat shrunk using sealing heat shrink from www.genuinedealz.com. I am running a 6gauge ground from the plate to the starter and a 4 gauge wire from starter to battery.
You CANNOT have too much ground!!!

I rarely ride in true fresh, always at least brackish, and I'd say 25% of the time it's 100% saltwater

Total loss is just like a stroker crank for surf Free ride.... It just makes the ski harder to ride/control, and will wear you out faster. HP and "HIT" is so overrated in the surf.

i use to run total loss in the surf never again though, i sink my ski too much. and good luck trying to get that total loss to fire after being submerged in salt water. not worth the problems to me.

Other than going to a freeride, I'm flatwater only. I love TL and will just grease it up for the rare surf trip.

i am a flat fresh water TL loving man too, i just swap in my stocker for when i went to daytona and hit the surf. my ski was fine without the TL in surf but for flatwater its the best part on my ski. I am even getting a new backup one.

exactly...the backup ski is piped and propped (but what else do you really need?) and sits in the garage fogged down...It doesnt go to the beach, otherwise ur the guy with the "extra ski" :shhh:

Solder, shrink wrap, and make sure your plug boots seal properly. Electrical tape and boots that are too big will work fine in freshwater but they'll bite you the first time you hit saltwater...they'll shock the piss out of you too!

never ride fresh, too many rocks and gators. i'll stick to the sharks

Yeah they are basically just a really lightweight flywheel that fires when the magnets go over the pickup. The timing setting is like stock and it's fixed. Can't remember if they have a rev limiter or not.
