Any racers or waterskiers?? Buoy course question.

Got a guy on my lake, 'professional' water skier. Sets up a buoy 'course' down the side of the lake and leaves it there for the entire summer. Skis every morning at 7:30 sharp and every evening as well.

State maintained, small 380 acre lake, not private. Anyone know the legality of just dumping in buoys and leaving them there?

Basically I didn't take issue to this until this dillchop started thinking that since he laid out the course, he basically laid claim to that entire portion of the lake, and when he wants to practice, he tries to kick folks out that are in the vacinity of his course...fishermen...jetskiers..he doesn't descriminate.

My son had a run in with this guy yesterday. The guy is dragging his buddy through the course on a slalom ski. The skier knocks a buoy off. They're those little ones like the size of a soccer ball. They continue their run and then drop the skier near shore. My son, who is out on his B1 takes a rip out there, grabs the buoy, putters over to the course and jumps in to tie the buoy back on.

The dude in the MasterCraft sees him out there and tools on over to give him a ration of crap, thinking my son is messing with his slalom course. My son explained that the skier had knocked it off and he was reattaching it. He gets the usual "You Jet Skiers are always out here hitting my buoys and knocking them off". My son again says that he is trying to fix the course, and that he didn't knock it loose. The fat ass says "Yeah, right, forget it, I'll fix it myself" obviously not believing a word my kid says. So my son says "Fine, whatever", climbs back on the Blaster, now a little pissed off, and does what any self-respecting teenager would do..gives the guy an education about what the 'other' use of a B1s safety spout is. And thankfully that's all he did, because the way my son rides (usually shoulder dragging in the water while his ski is basically running on edge) he could have swamped this guy if he felt like it. Not to mention my son is 6' and could have taken this guy apart. Luckily he does not have the temper his dad did at that age...

And yes, I witnessed it, so I know my son ain't lying to me about who knocked the buoy off. I was on shore, just having come home from work, not on my SJ unfortunately.

Anyhow I am just looking to find out the regs on setting out buoys and leaving them there on a public waterway. So maybe this guy gets a call from the Enviro Police telling him he needs to pull in his course every night, and set it back up every morning......

I've got other ideas as well, of course, if going through the proper channels gets me no satisfaction :sneaky:

hey may have a permit for the buoys, i know the lake i used to ride @ in florida had the same set-up... a ski school on a state managed lake had a permanent buoy course set-up they had a permit for it i think but in my case, the guy wasn't a complete douche and let us run the buoys when they weren't on the lake

Yeah, I am looking into the permitting right now.

And you can bet these buoys will be getting a #$%^ load of extra use from me and my chums REAL soon. He might own the buoys, but not the water they float in...Guess what I'll be doing every morning at 7:30 from now on ? Let's see, do I bring out the fishing boat and troll back and forth through the course?? Do I bring out the kayaks and paddle through it back and forth at .00000001 mph, or do I just practice my carving on the SJ? So many options....

My opinion (which usually sux) is to go out there and tell him that you were watching him ski from shore and that the skier did knock off the buoy and that your son was being nice and tried to reattach it. If he gives and apology at that time, let it go, if not, tell him that you don't give any respect to those who don't deserve it and that you'll make your personal "power spin" course about 20 yards (or whatever the legal distance is for a pwc to be by a boat) from his course every morning and every evening that you have available. Let him know that you'll do your best to help make him the world's number 1 slalom chop skier.

It's funny, that absolutely would have been my first course of action if this dickhead had been balling me out. But, he messed with my kid, so all bets are off.

So what do you want to teach your kid during this? How to handle things as an adult or how to behave like a kid? So far I'd say he's acted very appropriately.

Yes he has, and I have told him as much.

I have done nothing yet as far as recourse, I am checking with my local authorities to see if this douche bag is legally permitted. If not, I will do the adult thing and bring the matter up to the proper authorities, but only after I give him ONE fair warning, that he is not entitled to this area and if someone else is there first, he can wait till the area clears so he can safely perform his activity. BTW I have yet to mention how close he operates to shore and to swimming areas....

But:

Small lake and this guy basically claims 25% of the largest open running area. He has no right or authority to be pushing others out of this spot. So if he doesn't heed my 'advice' and continues with his modus operandi and traffic starts to pick up in this area all of a sudden by people who won't be bullied, making it an unsuitable spot for him to practice, So be it.

Right now I'm just blowing off steam Darin, and you know that. Happens every day on these boards. Thanks for providing a place for me to vent. :starwars:

'Twas me, I'd feel better not putting the authorities onto the jerk.

I'd want to know how your son feels about it. If the guy was really rude to your son, and tried to ruin his day, then I'd say anything goes, in the the way of paybacks, practical jokes, etc. If your son isn't sweating it, then let it ride- you can give the dude one more shot at being civil before buoys start getting filled with various substances, moved imperceptively, sunk, painted, untethered, relocated to the other side of the lake, etc. You can have some fun with this dude without getting the filth involved.

If the guy was a really rude prick to your son, maybe just motor over to him one fine day, and let him know how yo u feel about that sort of thing, without threatening him in any way other than with a look, if he's anything but respectful. Or, you could just just offer to stomp a mudhole in him, right then and there... more my M.O...

Buena suerte.

Water skiers are usally a pain in the arse

As a person who is more invovled in wakeboarding/waterskiing than jet skiing, I say jet skiiers are a pain in the arse. We run a straight line, turn arround, stay in the same line. Stay out of our wake. If you want surf, go to the beach. I personally stay far away from any boat pulling a skiier or w/e (Tube boats and any boat on a super choppy 4th of july has a wake ffa tho)

With that said, I don't think anything justifies being rude like that. There's always people on jet skis zig-zagging behind us not realizing it's sending a costant wake through our glass. The lake is 2 miles long, noone on it but us and them, and they just have to be in our shat, but I still roll with it.

The guy is an ass, do what you have to do. I'm only justifying his frustration, NOT his behavior. It's a public lake and really you (by you, I mean people in general) just have to roll with it. If he's acting like he owns it, I do say something has to be done. Just be careful, if the cops are shooing you away, he does know someone.

Is he timing his slalom runs?

If so, move the bouys a few feet when he's not looking. Do it a couple times a week. That will do his head in.

I'd take his buoys.

F*ck 'em.

Mike, I am surprised at this response. :bigok: Not that I don't agree. When I wrote the original post, I would have bet my left arm that Shonuff and SuperJett would have been the 'voices of reason'.

So, I batted .500, not too bad.

I'm giving the dude one chance. He can play nice, or the beatings begin. :chairshot:
