so me being the dummy that I am was trying to fire up the old SJ just so I could smell it. It wasn't starting and usually it just cranks right up. I don't even have to choke it. well it wouldn't start so I pull the choke still nothing. then I gassed it a little to try to start it still nothing. I started to look around and I had forgot to stick the plug wires back on when I installed the bilge. So I got to start it and it fires right up. ran for about 2 seconds and POW! I started it back up and it seems fine but man that was loud. My ears rang for about 5 minutes. can backfires damage anything? anything I should check before I run it?

Check all your exhaust hoses to see if they popped off. It can also damage reeds possibly.
Keep the gas cap loose while it's in storage....

If it was in storage I'd have a look at the waterbox too, make sure its okay.

Pop off exhaust tube (waterbox - hull) and have a look inside. The rubber will let you know how good of a backfire it was. The inside of mine is swiss cheese....

I had a couch in the shop that wouldn't start (like normal). The noob sank the ski and filled it with oil to keep it from rusting... Anyhow when it finally started it ran for a few seconds and then BOOM there was a couple gallons of oil in the water box that got blown out all over the shop walls. Nothing was damaged except the shop walls. I am still cleaning crap up in there. I have now moved my tool boxes so I don't have to clean them like that again.

i was at legdrag's shop when we started my ski up with my new motor for the 1st time.. we couldnt figure out why it wouldnt fire up after about 15-20 seconds of trying to get it started.

a few seconds later.. BOOM.. a bunch of stuff comes flying out of the exhaust.. apparently kevin's kid got bored and was shoving stuff up the rear exhaust tube.. it was pretty funny .. and it scared the hell out of us!

ive since put at least 20-30 hours on that engine.. no damage i can see. i wouldnt worry too much about it. if you did damage something, you'll know right away the next time you go riding.

Ah yes, the old banana in the tail pipe trick.....:Banane01:

the water box looked fine but I will have to feel around on it a bit.

Pull the tank and get a good look. My waterbox cracked from a backfire when it was started in February in the cold. Didn't realize it until May when the tank was out (didn't ride it from Feb - May though)
