ok so i have been chasing a backfire for a while since i got my new motor/pipe set up
my set up
Team scream SS 865
Power factor pipe
Dual ATP Carbs on Boyseen intake with triple stage reeds
2.0 needles
130 high 120 low
80g (black springs)
1.25 out on bottoms
0.75 out on tops
ATP Flame total loss
now before the expected "its the flame" starts up, i ran this same ignition on my previous motor and never had a single backfire - previous motor was JM 718, with b-pipe and single ATP carb and V-Force 2 reeds, ATP TL Flame
and to make sure that it wasnt the flame i have a brand new brain in there and have changed the coil for a brand new oem coil, brand new msd plug caps, all grounds are solid,, battery is fully charged
not sure whats causing the backfire
piston wash has been not exsitant until last ride where im starting to get a wash, which would make me think im rich, although reading the plugs they seem ok, a little on the rich side but not huge
backfire can be on first start up or a few in, for example last nigh in the garage i started it up, no backfires, get to the lake and had 5 backfires in a row (lucky the cops didnt think there was a shooting going down), once it backfires it seems then i will get constant backfires, after i have ridden, next start up i will get at least one backfire
im starting to go crazy and think it could be something to do with the motor? maybe the transfer ports on the team scream motor? maybe the powervalves? of which the boots get blown off constantly (i now ride with allen keys so i can put them back on), only reason i say this is it seems that a large percentage of the Team scream motors with atp ignitions seem to have these issues with back fires, maybe its simply a combo that dont work?
so i broke a steering cable yesterday and on my hull that means i have to pull the pipe and the water box, which i normally have covered in turf, just pulled the turf off and the waterbox looks like its swollen so much its ready to burst.. i dont think i can afford another backfire
so do i simply need to lean out my carbs significantly? or is something else is causing this issue?
ive noticed on the last couple of rides when the ski idles the revs incease but not enough to run away, not like an air leak
looking for as much input as possible (positive input please)
