Custom/Hybrid Backy Chan in the surf ?

Just curious how many of you chan owners have had your chan in the surf. I know only of one . Horndog had his out at hugo . His was set up for flat ( he handled it well ) . Just curious what others experienced .

I know this is a chan thread and it's susceptible to a be derailed ..... please only respond to the question .

Sportfish,

We had together a demo backi-chan at the Carolina Beach Freeride and most riders seemed to like it. We had the long rideplate on it and talked with Horndog when we were there about riding it in the surf. It turns quick like a short hull would but stayed hooked up with the jet dynamics +2 Intake grate, mag pump and long ride plate. It seemed to be fun and nimble in the small surf. The only thing I would advise is to put a front foothold recessed into the firewall, to give you a little more tray up front.

First off disclaimer: I don't own a Chan. With that said at the Carolina Freeride I had a solid 2 hours of ride time on a Chan with the surf plate powered by a limited 701 setup back to back with a -4 SF with nearly the same 701 limited drivetrain. They are both superior riding hulls, however, if I had to pick one for surf it would be the SF and here's why. The #1 issue I had was not being able to shift my wait over the hull while standing in a surf stance. I never felt balanced when cruising down and along side the face of a crashing wave. The Chan just flat out needs a front foot hold for surf, and their is plenty of room to add one. If feels like the SF will keep up righting itself with a wave curling on you acting like it grabs the ski and then lets go, grabs lets go, and so on. The Chan tends to roll more with the wave seaming as if its sitting lower in the water as when the wave starts to push you around it never lets go. I think this can be corrected again with a front foot hold shifting the center of gravity. When riding the 2 ski's I noticed I never got fatigued when riding the SF, I was well balanced on it and didn't have to fight it that much. After the first 30minutes on the Chan I had to get out past the breakers and take a short float break.

Although not part of your question, I felt the Chan railed 100x better than the SF and was all-around a funner play boat in the small rollers and flat inlet riding even with a little 701 in it. I feel a front foothold would make a night and day difference with the Chan's balance in the surf. Bottom line: If the Chan and the SF were the same price and because I do a little of both flat and surf I would buy a Chan and add a front foot hold and have a solid all round boat. If I never plan on riding flat SF is the way to go.

I haven't had my Chan in the surf yet, but even on flat I wish I had the FFH so i'm glad its not just me. I appreciate your ride report for surf. Maybe someday....

He has front footholds as an option, or just added it as one. I had asked for a spot to store a extinguisher, and that's what we came up with. It is recessed into the firewall.

Thanks .... For the write ups. I rode Hugo with Horndogg .... Unfortunately did not get on his ski. This ski would be set up for surf but would see some lake action from time to time . The question I face is to get rid of the tweeker (my creation) and go to this for a surf boat.

Decisions ...... Decisions

I could definitely see riding a Chan in surf but would 100% need a recessed FFH to gt my weight over the center of the hull and would want a thicker/heavier layup. I liked how it rode in the choppy flatwater inlet. Definitely a stable predictable hull that does what you want it to do. It reacted well to user input and didnt "BOB" you off. I was very impressed with it.

Dag you gave a good review but I have to say a hull that gets rolled in waves and hooks turns goes hand in hand compared to a hull that rides loose on a wave face without getting tossed. That hull is going to feel more loose while railing turns also but it really depends on the speed you are riding. My Freak has rear rocker and rides loose when flat but if laid over real hard the low/skegged wide bondrail really grabs the water and hooks a turn. Once you get used to the concept it's unbeatable IMO. It's like anything else, you will get used to how your hull is setup and make the best of it as long as its not a crappy design from the get go.

Would you, or would you just keep pretending that you are going to fix your ski and instead keep riding the demo hulls? ; )

Well ...... BK, sano, dog and Co. This is turning into Real chan thread with all the bashing...... I'm working on my circus but have to spend about 1000 plus to Finnish it. Tank ,paint, turf etc.

Since you all must know my business here's my circus list.

Build / buy battery box

Mount hard points for h20 box

Buy / mount tank

Buy handle pole

Etc.....

My procrastination usually pays off..... Damn I just thread jacked mt own thread.

Don't make me get that project done in my garage before you get the circus done boy.*

Ok fine, let's talk about surf riding a chan in the surf! l personally have never rode one in the surf so could not give an honest opinion.Who else has rode one in the surf?

*Please note that l will be doing the turf on this new tweeter build. So that pressures off.
