Bar clamps for stand ups??

Who else besides UMI makes bar clamps?? I changed out the bars on my sxi to UMI 0 degree bars now my stock clamps aren't big enough to fit around the bars.

Scott, unless you're talking a very wide gap between the clamp and the turnplate, I think its supposed to be that way (everyone, dont beat me up if this is not true ha ha). At least in my case, I've always had a 1/16 or so gap after tightening up new bars on my SJ's, I think thats so you are sure to get a really tight fit, it won't 'bottom' out on the plate and stay loose.

Just tighten evenly from the two sides, so the clamps evenly settle on the bar.

I do not think that is supposed to be that way, that loads the bolt in 'tension' AND 'sheer', they are not designed to be loaded in 'sheer' in this application.

I think this because of the nice flat machined surface where they would normally mate together and allow the bolt to simply apply tension and friction to that joint.

Two SJ's and a WB1 with stock turnplates - I've never been able to tighten them down completely (UMI bars 0/4 on the SJs and a Fly Racing on the WB1). I feel like If I tighten them any further I'll break it or strip it out. I left them as they were and they haven't budged. It's only a very small gap (1/16" or less).

I will look at some when I get home also, it is very likely that I am wrong, it just seems like a questionable design if the caps arent seated.

I found a pic without a gap, then realized i had 3/4" instead of 7/8" bar in the clamps.

I think Ill take a sanding drum and make the arcs larger so they seat them selves.

apparently the load is so light that other stuff gives before that bolted joint does.

I agree, I even installed new Pro Taper bars on my KDX last week and the instructions state that there MUST be a gap.

I see, the bars themselves arent machined tolerances, so in order to make sure the bars can be tightened enough to not slip, there has to be a smaller arcs, and a gap.

I see, I made the assumption that all the machine work ( saddles, and bars) were tight on the money and would tighten down, leaving the gap allows room for variance.

In your defense, when they didnt fit for me the first time I replaced bars on the 90 SJ, I just kinda shrugged my shoulders and figureed "it'll hold" and went on. When it happened on the 02 SJ, I thought maybe thats the way its supposed to be. When it happened with different bars on the B1 I knew it was meant to be.

I would have thought they'd fit perfect too.

Thanks for the incite guys. I figured there would be a gap. When I tighten down both bolts evenly there is still an 1/8" gap at both ends of the bar clamp. Its to much gap for me. Like Mouthfulloflake said and I agree the possibility of sheering the bolts greatly increases. If the bolts were a "grade 8" bolt it wouldn't bother me as much but stainless is a softer metal. I might grind out the inside of my clamps some to get the gap a little smaller. Besides this gives me a reason to order new shinny billet ones.:fest06:

You will also have a gap with the billet clamps.

I'll probably get the billet ones and grind the inside if the gap is more than I would like.
