Blaster hull paint

Hey Guys,

Just finished my rear rocker on my blaster and gonna be starting to paint soon. I know rustoleum doesn’t recommend a primer for the appliance epoxy but I already used a automotive sandable primer so I can pin point imperfections easier so it turns out good. I’m wondering if after I do my last coat of primer if I should sand the primer before I use the epoxy paint, or the primer will have enough bite for it, just don’t want my paint flaking off in sheets when I ride this summer!B8CA314B-5338-4832-98B9-18D7461EC86A.jpeg

I think I should elaborate here, the reason factory paint peels off in sheets is simple, first there is no primer, they shoot straight onto the Metton or SMC surface, no primer, no prep, no sanding, the paint has nothing to hold onto, also the Metton or SMC has mold release built into it so it will release from the metal molds after it is heated and formed, the heat is what brings the mold release to the top of the material, so basically you are shooting paint on top of wax with no sanding to create tooth or a mechanical bond and expecting it to stick.

I just ordered some of the Spraymax DTS med grey for a 3D I am working on, adhesion promoter, Spraymax then acrylic Urethane, the Spraymax is 2k Catalyzed primer in a spray can, you hit the button on the bottom of the can , it injects the catalyst, shake and spray , good stuff !

The proper procedure is 220 grit the hull. , prime it, sand primer to 400 grit, paint it , no etching going on really unless you are using self etching primer, the bond is mechanical. the 220 grit provides the tooth for the primer , the 400 grit provides the tooth for the paint, I paint strictly with Urethane as it give the best long term durability, shine and toughness, it is also spot repairable and blendable as long as it's not a metallic paint., on metallics you are screwed the metallic paint turns the flake up on end when you sand it and you can always see a repair on metallic paints
