Finally getting around to painting my 95' Waveblaster, which still has its original paint. I know lots of you guys have painted up your skis. I have the ability to do all the work, just not sure exactly what products to use. I need to prep the hull and hood for painting, but I have some decent scuffs in the hull.
- what to use for fixing scuffs/dings/worn down hull?
- what paint works best?
- what primer or sealer to use?
- how much paint? how many coats?
- any other info you guys think I should know before starting to buy and/or order?

Just recently went through this- rockered my ski and painted it, had never touched fiberglass or sprayed paint before this

Epoxy resin and cabosil will work, although it can be tough to sand, some suggest microballons instead- I used total boat total fair 2 part filler for most fairing/filling, it was quick and easy to work with- very smooth sanding of you get it done before fully curing

What paint you use is gonna depend on "how far you want to take it", messing with automotive paint can get expensive to do it right. You really need a 30+ gallon compressor, half way decent gun and the proper filtration/drying system- moisture and oil in the line will destroy a paintjob and set you back days of labor. After spending hundreds of $$ on paint and a ton of hours sanding by hand I wasn't about to chance it.

Of course you don't have to buy high level stuff- I ended up building a copper pipe air/water separator setup, made a desiccant dryer out of a water filter and ran a sub micronic air filter at the end.

It really depends on how good you want it to look, you can get decent results with a harbor freight paint gun, single stage paint and a 20 gallon compressor

Due to its lower cost, I used tamco paint- their DTA epoxy primer and ended up going with their high build hp700 epoxy primer for the bottom of the ski after block sanding and breaking through the DTA primer (much lower build/thinner than the high build primer).

Next ski I will just use the HP700 high build, it fills in imperfections much better. Wasnt bad to sand, although I had to move down to 150 grit sandpaper before moving on to 220, 320, 400

Used their black base, 3 coats, probably used around 1.5 quarts, I did a large test panel and some other parts as well and wasted a bit

Used their Intercoat clear for mixing in the chameleon pearl powder

Ended up using 1 quart of clear coat, went with their Hi-impact clear due to it being recommended for marine use.

I had never painted before this, but I found their products pretty forgiving (and they ship quick)- I just followed the basics and all the info sheets to the letter and everything came out pretty good...took a while since I was learning on the fly, but YouTube is an amazing resource

Damn that's a pretty blaster! looks like it turned out for ya.
I have some resin lying around somewhere so I'll end up using that for the hull dings.
As for the paint...I have a 50 gal compressor, paint gun, inline moisture control, and a garage set up right now to paint so I'm set up to do any kind of paint job for my ski right now.
You're using a different primer for the hull vs. body but the same paint for the whole ski? Next time you'd just use the HP700 for the whole thing? Same clear coat for the whole ski? Was 1 quart of clear coat enough? So...

- HP700 Primer
- Urethane Reducer
- Color
- Hi-Impact Clear

Also where can you find a rocker kit?

It's all fiberglass so the entire thing in Epoxy primer. I just did a superjet and used 1 quart of primer, 1 quart of paint and 1 quart of clear. Keep in mind that when mixed with activator or reducer the "1 quart" is actually a little more.

If I was doing it again and a solid color I would just do gelcoat. It is so much more durable and you just wetsand and buff to get a perfect finish.

Thanks man, I ended up going with the high build HP700 since I ran out of the DTA primer and was burning through it pretty easily when block sanding- I did a big test panel and wasted a bunch when I was testing it....a quart kit would do it, stuff is super thick and mixes 1:1 and can be reduced a bit- I did somewhere around 5-10% and it went down well with a 2.0 tip and a sprayit LVLP gun

Ended up using one quart of clear and had enough to do some other small parts and test panel

For the rocker kits, hit up Carter B / Carter Brackett...on Facebook or here

I've heard gelcoat is really hard to work with unless you've been around it, and the pigment you add is hard to get exactly how you want. I agree you can't beat the durability of it. Might think about putting a coat on the hull, I ride in rivers a lot and hull scuffs and dings just happen.

Ok it sounds like a quart of each will do the trick then, might have some other Tamco questions if I end up getting that. Thanks for the paint and rocker info
