FX-1 BOB on a Budget Buildup

Hey Bros,

I can't afford a BOB, but I recently bought a stock '95 FX-1 that I plan on send'r hard with. I call'r my BOB on a Budget. I want to create a thread to get you bros input on'r and see whatcha think. Didn't get a photo of'r before I tore the turf off, but she was stock and in great condition. Looks just like this:ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372207711.390530.jpg

Here she is after I ripped the turf off of'r:

I'm puttin' BOB footholds in'r, so I cut the side of the tray for that: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372207869.222524.jpg
Gotta slam some brew while ya work!

Foam was a little water logged, so I decided to rip an' tear'r out and replace it with ping pong balls:ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372207984.773335.jpg

Before dumpin' the balls in'r, I epoxied the BOB hold plates in'r. Had to trim ALOT of glass off the BOB holds. Basically every thing around the thickest portion of the plates had to be cut off. I then glassed all of the holes in the hull from the rivets that were holding the old sidewall padding on. I also siliconed around every possible point that could leak water into the hull, and reinforced the bond line with fiberglass: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372208118.187846.jpg

Next, I put a 1/2 interior diameter PVC pipe in'r for installation of trim in the future. #backflipsferdays

Next, bros, I dumped the balls in'r!!ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372208558.656963.jpg

Also, I cut the lip off'r backside and siliconed'r since she separated apart from the cut:ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372208949.072037.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1372208963.588455.jpg

After I dumped my balls in'r, I did some foamin' with great stuff to create a flat surface to glass on top of:ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372209026.506140.jpg

After she dried, I trimmed'r and glassed'r:

That's where I'm at, bros! Next step is to install my Pancake Pete!

Big shout out to MWol2 (aka 'Bossman') at ASC (Anchorage Ski Clinc) for all his help with this buildup at his shop. He's runnin' a great shop up here, and is a major promoter of freestyle ridin' up here in Alaska. He really takes'r to the next level!!!

There shouldn't even be a single drop of water common' into'r so I'm not too worried about the great stuff gettin' wet or the balls degradin'. Could be valid concerns though. I appreciate the input, brosef.

You need beer pong ping pong balls, they're waterproof. Just look em up on ebay. I think they make a special waterproof great stuff but don't quote me on it, brah.

Keyword, "shouldn't " I've never seen a tray that didn't leak after being cut up from stock form and ridden in surf..either 4lb 2 part urethane pour foam for bouancy and strength in surf , or pink extruded poly styrene you cut to fit.. May want to consider this while under the knife. Good job so far tangle,I just cringe when I see people do this and throw a nice turf job over a disaster waiting to happen.. Not hatin on the work done just making suggestions from experience, good luck buddy..

The next level is ping pong balls and great stuff? I would reconsider this approach, and it is tough to read your Alaskan surfer pirate dialect.

'rrrrrr bro

So I just bought this ski off tanglebar after it sat in a shed unfinished and untouched for the last four years. I'm in the process of finishing it up now and will have it ready to go by May. Here are some updates.

as you can see I needed to build out the top rear corners of the gunwhale bump to fit the plate in a proper position for the holds. I used fiberglass reinforced body resin stuff.

I also glassed in a pancake Pete front foothold. And after sanding this is what we ended up with. Tray all ready for turf as soon as I finish getting the 144 pump in.
