I don't know how well it will work for paint... but I used epoxy resin mixed with glass microspheres. The microspheres are hallow so there was pin holes when I sanded. I went back with resin mixed w/ nothing and sanded that. It buffed shiny and was glassy to the touch but I didn't paint. I only lifted a mold. I'm not sure if you will get the finish you want with paint, but I could see my reflection in the glass/dried resin.

I heard bondo can absorb water but I've never tried it.

i used west systems 410 with resin and worked good. best stuff to use for a filler don't use bondo it crap, the hull i had was fixed with bondo and it also was chiping.

I heard you could use talc and baby powder mixed with resin. It sands hard but it wont leave pin holes like glass microspheres.

bondo is 100% fine to use on a ski for chips and filling small dimples... I would not use it to fill a 1" hole, but a screw hole... all day. I have worked in the paint and body field for years...

I would not use resin like listed above... you will never be able to work it smooth like "bondo" I use "Evercoat" body filler They also make a product called Durabond that is a little stonger than "bondo" if you want more strength...

fyi Bondo is a brand name

okay... so where do you get a good filler like what you suggested slutty?

what is the best thing to look for in a filler?

we just finished a sanding layer of resin with some fairing compound in it. worked great for the step we were at trying to even out fiberglass.

now we need something a bit smoother that will be a paint ready filler after some light sanding. the epoxy resin with fairing compound left little pinholes which are no good.

ski is primered now, just to help find the high and low spots we need to fill on the next time around using filler. especially near the bow eyelet.

let me know what the best filler is and where to look for it.
i checked the evercoat website and it seems like they have a ton of different fillers... im not really sure which one to use

how about this one? http://www.discountmarinesupplies.c...ERGLASS_EVERCOAT_LITE_WEIGHT_BODY_FILLER.html

perfect.... lightweight and good quality...

Ive used sm fairing compound from uscomposites which is a resin additive and really havent had trouble with pinholes. I even would throw in a little cabosil to make it harder and no problems.

thats the stuff we used...but it left pinholes.

we tried an evercoat filler that they had at boaters world... paid way more than it was worth... and it was soft and chipped right off the next day...

back to square one..

the red fairing filler from us composites works good if you put it on thick. too thin and it makes those pinholes. i am waiting on more resin to continue... as of now its on hold.

410+epoxy has always worked for me,even bondo will leave pinholes, with the 410 you just brush on a very thin layer of epoxy+410 and sand it and prime it,it always comes out perfect for me.

im going to try the brushing it on thin trick... i think i found another thread you suggested this in wedo... we have been using spreaders and coating it thick.

cant complain though... the square we did we used almost 3 yards of biax and a gallon of resin... that sucker is only 10 pounds heavier, but we did defoam and cut some parts off the ski. it weighed in ~115 bare hull after reinforcment and it was about 107 before but it had the midshaft in while being weighed.

a lot of resin went to waste due to mixing up too much and the amount that ends up getting squeegied out on the cardboard workbench.

Yeah I would do some skim coats. You wont get it right with the 1st or 2nd coat, just keep after it till all pin holes are gone. I've used auto fillers and they are the same. Try to get the fast drying resin if you hate waiting on it to dry.

Another really good product is the Duratec polyester primer,it will fill small pinholes with ease and is very high build,it sands to a very nice finish.

Yeah, alot of ppl dont know that you can hide small flaws with several coats of primer and wet sanding with 400 grit. Ive seen it take care of minor flaws.
