Broken reeds and sunk skis...My blowsion CAS scupper is something else.

Had a crappy day at work so I decided to take the ski out and blow off some steam. Had it out two weeks prior and had no issues. This go around it would start and idle fine but if you gave it any gas it would die.

Anyways I'm pretty much out in the middle of the river fiddling with it. The only way I could get it run was with the primer. Next thing I know my bilge pump is dumping serious amounts of water and before I could blink my eyes she was under water. Luckily the foam in the tray kept about 3 inches of the rear out of the water. It took about 3 hours to wrestle it to the shore line.

I'm on the fence about getting an aftermarket hull or taking my hull back to blowsion and having them rip out the scupper. I noticed most of the aftermarket hull have scuppers installed. I wouldn't mind getting a ricker edge but only if I can get it minus the scupper.

Negative Ghost rider..no more scuppers for me.

When it happened I though I had a hole in the bottom of my ski or I lost a cooling line. But I know I didn't hit anything and even if a cooling line would have come loose or had a hole in it it wouldn't have filled up and sunk that fast. As soon as I go it home I looked at the bottom and I couldn't find any cracks or holes. I kind of susected all along the scupper was responsible for my 50 million heart attacks but i wasn't 100% sure until I got it home. The weird thing about it is that I have had that scupper in there for probably 4 or 5 years and never had a problem. I'm guessing a rock or piece of seaweed was stuck in there. I coundn't find anything stuck in there but that's the only explanation for the rapid sinking.

I've never had luck with scuppers or duck bills, essentially anything relying on rubber. After sinking my 3rd ski, we switched to versi-plugs on all of our builds and have not had any issues. You should be able to remove a scupper flap and install a Versi-Plug Max (#PD1701) in the same 2" tubing. Just my own experience, at least.

Have you pulled the flap off to inspect it on the backside ? I Had a Rubber scupper flap tear on the back side, only viewable once removed

You can swap out the scupper for a one way valve in the edge.

I'm just worried that a rock or a chunk of seaweed or a piece of zip would get stuck in the valve. I never want this to happen again. It was the most terrifying 3 hours of my life. I feel really bad for people that have lost their skis and never been able to recover them. Luckily mine stayed afloat but just barely. Superjets weigh a ton bone dry and it's even worse with an engine full of water and a full tank of fuel.

I'm headed to Specific city this weekend to watch the races. I'm hoping to talk to the some of the blowsion guys. If I could order an edge sans a scupper I'll probably go that route. If not I'll have them cut my tray out and take out the scupper and trim tube and re seal everything up.

I love my jetworks 771 and its going to need some work after this but I would love to see what it's like in a shorter lighter hull.

the flap is up in the tube pretty far. It dosen't look like there is a way to take it out but I poked at (lightly) with a long screw driver and I was able to push the flap off to the side pretty easily. Its just a little rubber flap. I could easily see how a chunk of ziptie or a small stick or rock could easily ruin your day....and your riding season.

You're thinking too far into this.

The blowsion C.A.S. scupper is basically a home depot one way vent valve. I'm pretty sure it stands for cheap as sh it.

There are many ball style scuppers on the market, and many alternatives to cutting open a brand new rickter edge, removing the whole scupper tube/ trim tube, and re glassing it back together.

FWIW I run a ball scupper on my surf boat, and 2 rubber flap x scream scuppers on my flat boat. Neither of which have bilge pumps and the flat water boat doesn't have any foam for flotation. WHile its stressful having your ski almost sink, a lot of people have been in your scenario, me included. Its part of owning a freestyle jet ski.

Every time I read “ I run scuppers with no foam” I just shake my head. I’d juat as soon jump out of a plane without a parachute. Makes the same amount of sense.

If you order a new built boat from Thrust or TC you could specify this I think. You could ask. My buddy ordered his with no grafics and was gonna have rickter install non rickter turf..

use one of these on the inside/engine compartment end of the drain..
i used one on a superjet with the blowsion one way valve and also used one on a rickter edge that comes with the rrp scupper..
i can't remember the sizes but these come in variable sizes that fit perfectly for either one...
they don't pop out no matter how hard of a landing you hit, weather your in the surf or flatwater riding

The smaller sizes of those plugs work great for running leak down tests as well.
