whats the difference between a 701 motor, 760 motor, lamey motor, 61x motor, 62T motor etc. etc.???? I see all these numbers and names but have no idea what they mean. is one better than the other? thanks

These are all Yamaha engines, mostly for Superjets

A 701 engine is the stock Superjet engine (1994 and on). They come in two variants....61x cases / 61x cylinders with single carb, and 62T cases/61x Cyl with dual carbs.

A 760 uses 62T cases, and a 62T cyl (Different port timing and bigger than 61X cyl). It uses dual 44 mm carbs.
However, You can make a 61x cyl a 760 as well, but that involves custom sleeves and a bit of machining.

A Lamey engine refers to Custom Aftermarket cylinders (made by Dan Lamey) that have much better port configurations that Yamaha stock cylinders.
They come in stroker, non-stroker, Power-Valve, Non-Power-Valve, big-bore, non-big bore, configs. However, they still use Stock Yamaha 62T cases.
You can even run a stock crank at stock stroke, but for strokers, you'll need a custom crank.

Yeah, what he said. You can actually bore a 61x cyl to a maximum bore of 84.5mm. I am running a 61x at 84mm making a 760 on my SJ with no special machining. The sleeves are thin but no problems so far.

kinda getting it ...

so if I have a 96-98 701 superjet with dual carbs, it will have a 62t case and 62t cyl. which is o.k to turn into a sick power plant? and how do i go about tricking out this engine? sorry for the stupid questions.....

In stock form...........

701 = 61x cyls.
760 = 62t cyls.

61x cases = single carb
62t cases = dual carb

Anyone care to explain how to tell the cases apart?

Great thread... suscrib'd. :biggrin:

It will have a 61X cylinder. 62T cylinders only came in sit downs. Read this forum every day and you will learn how to trick it out and make your wallet thinner.

Easiest way is to look at what is stamped on them. However, the 61x cases has it's intake manifold mounting area curved upward, so that the manifold is mounted flat. The 62t cases has it's intake manifold mounting area more or less straight out the side, so the that intake manifold itself is curved up to bold the carbs on.

Make sense? Here are pics of the two... easy to tell which is which...

all stock 701 SJs or blasters with dual carbs have 62T cases.
all stock 701 SJs or blasters with a single carb have 61x cases.
ALL STOCK 701 SJ'S AND BLASTERS HAVE 61X CYLINDERS (no matter what case they have).

62t cylinders are not as good for making low end power.
