does the carb and choke cleaner that you would buy at at auto store hurt the seals and stuff in the carb?

It shouldn't - although it's worth saying there is not much to clean inside a diaphragm carburetor throat.

I use gumout every time without problems. I've even gotten some on the diaphragm.
