Cleaning electric terminals

Hey guys,

Quick question. Bought my buddies SJ and it was giving me a ton or problems. Finally took the ebox out and noticed the + terminal going to the battery was so corroded that is broke away. I assume this was from my buddy subbing the ski and water getting into the box. I got a new box and took the old one out and apart. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can soak these terminals in (see pics) to get the corrosion off and just clean them in general? Or do you rec me just buying new stuff? Trying to save cash atm. Was hoping I could soak these ends in something to give them a nice cleaning. I REALLY hate taking this thing out and hope to never have to do it again.

Thanks!

Nick

Wow that is ugly!

Wd40 and a wire brush work great. Once it is clean use di-electrical grease on all the connectors.

I am surprised the msd hasn't failed.

buddy paid like $200.00 for that msd and I really don't wanna get rid of it... Do you think its gonna give me issues in the future? I'd honestly rather pay more money for working parts then to do a temp fix and put this f#$r back in there and have it fail mid season. I have all those cleaning suggestions on hand so I can def do that.

If it works run it. Some of them run forever, others do not. If you have problems with intermittent spark or no spark it is most likely the msd.

Also take a part and clean your stop/start wire connectors and the switches themselves.

Muriatic may work. But if it's left for more than a few minutes on aluminum it will soften/melt it unless you decrease the concentration

Ok thanks guys. Rdrttoy I may hit you up on that stuff. Everything was actually working correctly except the corrosion broke down the positive to the starter and it lost connection. That was the main reason I had to take the box apart in the first place. Do you think I should cancel that amazon order? I figured it's cheap but I mean if I keep the water out of there it should last me a few seasons right?

I also suggest a new electrical box gasket when you assemble it. Keeping the water out will help in he future.

This^^^ Make sure and torque all the screws to the same tightness and not overly tight. I also put a thin layer of silicone around it for extra protection.

+1 again for OEM electrical parts only.

I've read the MSD fail when they get wet, but it won't cost you hardly anything to add new terminals for now.

Or buy the whole ebox rdrttoy has for sale here: http://www.x-h2o.com/index.php?threads/61x-electronics-61x-flywheels-61x-stator-bendix.171669/

There are several guys (JetManiac, Rdrttoy, etc) that have ebox gaskets too.
Awesome thanks man. Seriously considering just getting the whole ebox

Glad to see others jumped in regarding your AM replacements. I would cancel your order if possible. Just not worth the risk of running AM
