Other Considering putting together a tuning web app. Interest?

As some of you know I am taking computer programming in school, and we have a web/design project coming up that i thought i'd use as an opportunity to setup a nice tuning/jetting web app. If it works well i would consider pushing it towards a mobile based app for android and possibly apple, but for now it should start simple. I would like it to data log information inputted, disregarding excess (+/-X%) of the mean values for those that want to tell it their 650 has 210 main jets on twin 50 blackjacks... :|

It would possibly pull in the following info:

~Carb size
~number of carbs
~flame arrestor (Maybe AM/Stock)
~bore (mm)
~stroke (mm)
~dome CC
~reed type (rounding up values for carbon/fiber vs stock) (this would probably not be in the alpha build)
~case type (maybe)
~exhaust type (difficult to firmly calculate values for these)
~porting. porting to specific companies would be difficult to accurately calculate. This i may just make an option of porting or No porting and change the values by X%. (sorry no option for "freestyle porting/jetting" alex).
~decking and squish would not be included to start, but could be added fairly easily.
~flat top vs regular pistons i would leave out

The alpha run of this will probably use a stock 61x, 62t , 64x, etc as baselines (as per yamaha), it would handle up to triple carbs. I'm hoping to use this to aid in the struggle of those who are new to the sport. I'm hoping it could get them on the right track sooner. Obviously its not going to be perfect, I will probably leave screw turns out of it for the initial run, and see how easily adding them in would be later on.

Ill host it on the school server while i can, and then could load it elsewhere if it becomes popular. Probably wont see anything up and running for 3-4 months, but we shall see as i have free time.

I think it is a nice idea but in reality the amount of variables that come into play when dealing with tuning carbs will make the app almost ineffective except for the most basic of circumstances. Temperature, humidity, elevation, riding style, fuel type, and engine load would all need to be evaluated to be accurate.

Maybe you can get some of the well know carb guys like Novi, Full spectrum, Blackjack, Vforce, boyesen, groupk, etc to give you input since it is for a school project.

that said, i do appreciate the innovative thinking. Our sport is, quite honestly, very behind the times when compared to other motorsports and these kinds of ideas will only help.

I agree! The hardest being humidity, riding style and engine load. I would build it based off known setups, and it would use the known good data to try and pinpoint a starting point. things like temp, humidity, riding style and engine load could possibly be calculated, however as we never ride in the same location or temp back to back, and most dont change their tuning because its a brisk morning vs a hot day, they can probably be overlooked as this would get your baseline, not your final tune. I hate the guesswork on baselines and i see people asking constantly what they should start at, with dozens of thoughts spread all over the spectrum. I only wish i could setup a perfect tune app, its more of a connivence things and an excuse to make a school project based on my fav sport.

I should add that temp, humidity, elevation and fuel type can be calculated for. Riding style could be set to a valued %, and engine load would probably only have a fresh or saltwater option as the density doesnt change much. Prop pitch would be the only real factor that screws with that value.

Plug and play is what everyone wants, a little tuning experience is what really need. A common leaf blower responds to carb tuning like out skis since they load the same and have similar carbs.

i wish my leaf blower ran a SBN46, i could rip up some asphalt with it!

If they can make shooting apps that let you place a bullet on target at 1000yards with all the input variables, you should be able to come up with an app that would at very least bring you to within a jet size of optimum. You might have to possibly expand your variables and input tables a little wider but it's should be do able. Problem is you'll no doubt get some idiot who follows it a 100% and blows a motor and then beat down on you and forums like this saying its your fault.

Of course, you can never get around that. Its one of the reasons i would rather build a first step tuning app than something that says "heres your perfect tune". Ill be sure to toss in a disclaimer.

I am sure there is a tool o2 sensors, way to check flow, and/or formula for getting it right. Look into other more popular sports that also use carbs, or two stroke motocyles etc. As far as weather conditions there is a formal for that. Just need a decent kestrel.
