I bought a tool from Randy @ Watcon, it was an old shaft that he cut to about 6" long on the spline end, and he welded a T onto the non-splined end... You can hold the T in a vice and turn the coupler with a long flat bar.
Ya, I've done that before and it worked many times. Then i broke a ear off a coupler and bought the tool.
You know the ol' saying(about the right tool).. lol
You must admit it's better to spread that load around all the ears on the coupler with the tool..
It's definitely better but the tool is like $30 and hard to find. I would have bought one a long time ago, but denniskirk didn't have any in stock (that's when I found a flat bar for free and it has worked well for me).
The way I see it, you get two chances with each stock coupler, and you can trash a few stock couplers for $30 :Banane01:
Well..I got it off. I did not care if I ruined the stock coupler so I clamped the middle of the shaft in a vice, Heated the coupler with a torch, wrapped the bearing assy with a wet rag and tapped it loose with a hammer.
Came off pretty easy.
I made my own tool with a 3ft long piece of 2x2 wood and just made a couple of V cuts in it to make it fit the edges of the coupler ears. If you can secure the shaft in a vice or use an old piece of drive shaft with a nut welded to the end, it will spin off pretty easy with a little heat. I have done it several times and no problems.
WaveDemon and I just did what Wax did yesterday. Guess we made out with good luck, no issues! Holy Cripes...my new 13/17 3mm Solas 'effin Riiiiiiiiiiiips! :headbang:
