Super Jet Cracked foot tray going to reglass---need y'all's opinions

The foot tray in my square nose is cracked on the side so I'm going to reinforce the tray with a Fiberglass kit from Home Depot. I pulled the stock turf off and the job seems easy enough. Do y'all have any fiber glass opinions from what y'all have done? It seems like some of the foam under the tray is gone, would you guys recommend spraying more expanding foam down in there then laying the fiberglass? And will the Fiberglas kit from Home Depot work?

You guys opinions or pictures will help me tremendously

Don't do that or you'll be doing it again. Buy epoxy resin and quality glass.

yes. Buy some 2-part urethane foam from the same place you'll be ordering the epoxy resin from.
Check out the Tech FAQ section on this forum, it will answer nearly all of your questions and send you to the right places.

What weight density should I get in the urethane foam

i have broke several skis in the same place , the foam that supports the class has failed
just re glassing will fail eventually
need to de foam and re foam as well as repair the glass
now is a good time for foot holds!

Us composites has everything and they explain what each product is beat used for. I used 2lb foam with nice results. Be warned! That stuff really does expand 30x it's liquid volume!! I love my footholds so I'd recommend doing that while your at it. You are buying all the supplies anyway. I bought the Toby holds and they are great! Lots of room for padding and a pretty easy install! Can't beat his price either! Good luck

Your best bet is to refoam anything under the bondline with something other than expanding polyurethane. Water will never stop being under the tray, no matter what. That new urethane will soak it up nearly as fast as the old stuff. Get an EPS or EPP in there under the tray, install drains, then fill the gunwales with expanding PU.

you have to cut it up anyway might as well put in hold while youre at it. My SJ is cracked in the same spot as yours so im cutting it all out refoaming, installing some dawson diggers and foot straps

I'll be honest with you, I originally wanted to just returf but I convinced myself since that since I had the turf off I was going to install holds while I was at it. Prior to installing holds, I had absolutely 0 fiberglassing/epoxy experience. I didn't go for top of the line footholds, but now that I look back and honestly everytime I ride, I realize that footholds were the best thing I've ever ever done to my ski. Oh, and as far as returfing.. You don't want to rip off and returf, just put in the footholds now while you're at it :)

Edit: I was very hesitant and worried I would mess things up, but it's not that hard honestly. Just make sure you search the X for installing footholds and returfing until your eyes are sore and you've got a headache. Then, everything will be a breeze! And if you mess up, don't worry that much, fiberglass is extremely strong and can cover up your mistakes.
I actually enjoyed glassing my holds.
Good luck!
Edit again!: I highly recommend turfing something else before you turf your tray. In my opinion, turfing was A LOT harder than installing the holds. I turfed my fire ext. first and that really showed me how turf works with heat. Also, make sure you spend alot of time measuring your turf and leave some excess to trim. If it's your first time turfing, I'd possibly recommend ordering two sheets of turf incase you mess up. If you've got any questions, let me know, I'd be glad to help. Oh, and the two part foam is very amusing to see how much it expands, just be careful because that crap doesn't come off of stuff easily. If it dries on your skin, it will not come off until you shed/grow a new layer of skin. I had to use 60 grit sandpaper to sand it off the palms/fingertips of my hands LOL. So, USE GLOVES! And tape off anything you don't want the foam to touch.

I just recieved all the materials to finish this project...finally. I got the polyurethane expanding foam, epoxy resin and hardener, glass, hydroturf and footstraps. now just gotta get around to doing it. will post updated pictures as im going!US composites glass, etc..jpgOrange turf 1992 SN superjet.jpgDakine Foot Straps and Blowsion install kit.jpg

good luck! I had ZERO experience with fiberglass before this past winter when i did my rebuild. Patience is a virtue, until you mix the epoxy with the hardner, hope you got 3:1 for your first time. HIGHLY recommend checking out some build threads and the TECH section. I liked fiberglassing but it will deffinently not become a side hobby for me.

With the turf, make sure you get the RED can of DAP Weldwood. It works the best. turfing was a bit of a challenge for my first time with the holds and padding i used. Also with the DAP, I scuffed up the fiberglass prior to installation too. Got any questions just ask!

Hey Guys just picked up a 91 yesterday and was taking off all the lame decals today and I noticed that there was a bit of a hump in the foot tray. I pressed down on it and can hear a cracking nois, I am guessing the tray is cracked. Is this a common problem? What causes this? I have never owned a stand up and have wanted one since I was a kid but fiberglass is foreign to me and somewhat intimidating. comments?

Seems like a common problem if it was ridden by a bigger rider and just age of the ski. My ski was cracked straight through on the right side and had some stress cracks on the left and was cracked in a few other spots. Just gonna glass it to reinforce it To be honest with you, I just cut the tray out and cut the old foam out today (still working on it) and just poured in new foam today. It's honestly not very hard just takes awhile and is kind of a pain. I will post some pictures later and I'm gonna lay glass when I have some time in the next couple days. Shouldn't be a big deal. This is my first foam/turf job and it's not too bad just gotta take a day or two and do it. Good luck

got to working on the ski the past couple nights, its coming along pretty good. cut the tray out, cut the old foam out, put new foam in and laid 2 layers of glass with the epoxy resin and hardener. gonna lay turf tomorrow then hit the water! gonna post some progress pictures
