Blaster Crank seal question

Stator came loose in 701. This caused damage to flywheel magnet, stator looks okay. I can only assume that these pieces of tiny coil are the remains of the spring around the crank seal. I have no idea how that could have came off to get ground up... but it did. so this brings me to my question. Is that spring absolutely necessary for crank seal to work? I really just want to ride this weekend and I will get to replacing it next week.

Are you sure it's from the crank seal? The bendix also has very small wound springs used as retainers. That would be far more likely.

X2 it could be from the bendix, but the crank seal does have springs on both sides. It's possible that the seal may do it's job without one, but I wouldn't take that chance on my own motor. Seals are cheap, especially compared to cranks and pistons.

You better make sure it didnt come from the bendix or you will be in trouble!

Cant you just look at the exterior of the crank seal and see if it is in place?

Yeah the spring is not on crank seal. However my starter has failed to engage couple times recently. Would that be a sign of Bendix missing spring? Also is the front crank seal spring on the front of the shaft? I know the rear 1 is exposed...

Honestly it prob would be fine (as said above the front seal has a spring on bother sides), but i wouldnt take the chance an run with out the seal spring on my own stuff!........ Well that is of course assuming the surf wasnt head high or greater, cuz then ill do ANYTHING to get back out. lol

Well bwizzie I would go ahead and order a set of crank seals..... and anything else that might need to be replaced while your motor is pulled (carb kits etc).

If you need any help splitting cases and re-assembling, give me a shout.

Edit: You would prob be okay to ride this weekend... however, I would religiously check your plugs (well, front plug) every 20 minutes for any sign of a lean condition. If you start it up and it runs away well then you have an obvious air leak and you're done until you replace the seals. Just realize you're tempting fate....
