I am running a 61 x complete motor in my ski now have a ada head and b pipe and its fun and good power but of course I want more. lol

Thinking about buying some 62t cases and swaping the crank and top end over to those cases.

I really want to learn this stuff and do it my self. I have been reading and reading threads on here and think I can make it happen. Thinking about putting in some big bore sleeves in the cylinder and porting them my self.

Question is: Am I crazy to think I can do this with out ever doing it before and just from reading how to? I have rebuilt a few top ends buts thats the extent of motor work.

If so what are the things I can't do my self? After the sleeves are in does the cylinder need to be deck? Does the cylinder need to be bored out before it will take the big bore sleeves? Do the sleeves have to bored after I install them and port them? Is it possible to fly cut the cases to take the big bore sleeves your self or need to be done by a pro?

Any words of advice is welcome and thanked!

The sleeve installation goes something like this, the cylinder is heated up and the old sleeves are removed, then the aluminum block is bored out to accept the oversized sleeves, the cylinder is reheated and the sleeves are dropped in. The new sleeves are unfinished and protrude out the top of the cylinder slightly so the cylinder then needs to be decked and the sleeves are bored to the desired bore size. I don't see you doing any of the cylinder work except maybe getting the old sleeves out and maybe some porting. Northwest has sleeves that already have the bigger ports, that would be the way to go here and send the cylinder out to someone who does that kind of work everyday. The cases could possibly be done by hand but again much easier to send it out and have it done.

You sure could do it yourself except the machining. A word of note, the 62t cylinders have more meat around the sleeves thus allowing you to go much larger than a 61x cylinder when doing a big bore sleeve. Good luck and I'm the type of guy who likes to do things myself but most others will suggest you ship the whole thing out to a builder like jetmaniac.

Yeah the machining I will have to get done at a shop by a pro. But yeah I really want to learn my self and make it more hands on so I can feel acomplished and learn how it works. I have a spare 61x cylinder around hence why I am going to do that one. Isnt the port timing different too? 61x more bottom end? Or doe that all change when you put in big bore sleeves and port them? Might even invest in a real porting tool set up.

l don't want to thread jack but simply ask a question.

Can you take an old 650 yamaha cylinder and bore it out to 701? What problems,if any would you make for your self?

I dont think you would make any problems Sano. The exaust ports on a 650cc are so tiny you wouldnt even be in the same realm. Also the 6m6 cases are a little different then the 61x cases, reeds/intakes are smaller as well.

Overall it just would not work without a lot of effort. There are so many 650 cylinders out there for sale (ebay, etc).Guess that's why! Been trying to locate a freshwater 61x cylinder that has not been bored. "yea, good luck pal!"

Thats easy take a 61x cylinder pop two new sleeves in it and you have a 61x cylinder that hasn't been boredl

Yeah I have a 61x cylinder that has a cracked sleeve so this is why I am thinking about doing some big bore sleeves and getting some cases since I am running complete 61x in my ski. Just want something to do over the winter. lol

after having done it myself and having chucky do it better, I would say if you have the money send the cylinder and carbs to chucky and know that its gonna be on the money right out of the box. it took me 3 years to finally let someone else work on my ski. im glad I did. I know that I can do all the work, but I also know now exactly what I dont know or rather what someone else is expert at where I am just ok. that is what you are paying for, the expertise. the 30 years of learning that you dont have. Im not saying you cant do it yourself, just that if you have the money that there are certain areas that you will be better off leaving to a pro to get the most out of it.

anybody can do the porting, but do you think that a sportport template or someone copying a known professionally ported cylinder is gonna get the most out of it? or that they know why they are taking material out or leaving it in for your particular setup? for your carbs and pipe? that is what you pay for. and once you hog it out, you cant go back.

There are many many people out there that have modded their ski to the point they no longer run correctly, yes you read that right. I used to make quite a bit of money in the old days modding skis for customers because I knew what parts to change, modify etc to get the results they were looking for, now days I mostly put skis back to stock where someone else who did not quite know what they were doing have messed the ski up to the point that a stocker would outrun it and be way more reliable. You want to learn something, learn how to properly assemble and most importantly tune in a ski after it is assembled, many , many out there have no idea how to tune a ski and get the most potential out of it.

The guys on here give great advice. However, we can sit here and tell you to take it to a pro, but i've learned my best lessons doing it myself. I like to push the limits of my ability past what I'm capable so that I know where my boundaries are.

Build it yourself first, so that when you do :):):):) it up and realize exactly how much work is involved you will feel right about taking it to a pro.
