how's everyone running their cooling setup?

my motor is running great, but seems a bit hot. My buddy's bringing his infrared temp gun to check next time we ride. But I am curious to see how everyone is set up.

current water temp - 65 degrees

I'm running dual cooling to the exhaust manifold. I have the two center cooling lines capped off at the head. I run the rear out to the bottom of the exhaust headpipe. From the top of the headpipe T'd overboard and to the stinger. The front of the head I have going overboard.

I'm running standard cooling lines with no reducers at all. I'm wondering if I am flowing water through too fast for thermal transfer, as the water coming out of the pissers is not as hot as I would expect, given the temp of the motor.

thats exactly how i have mine running. it freaking rips. TC told me these motors have to run hot to make power, in turn you must run good oil to make sure everything stays lubed at these temps. it does seem really warm compared to my 701 but power makes heat i guess.

my pissers seem to be the same temp as my 701.

That sounds like Dasa's recommended cooling....Also worth mentioning billet cylinders do run a bit warmer than cast.

X2. At times my pissers would almost burn me with over spray.

Billet cylinder seem to get hotter and stay hot a lot longer than cast cylinders. Dasa put four water outlets on the head for a reason. An overheated two stroke is not good for making power . Overheating should not be as big an issue in cooler water , but I like to get all I can through mine.

Try adding a third outlet coming off the head, just take a bit of hose and jamb it down the scupper tube to dump the water overbaord, ride the ski hard and check the engine temps. These larger motors seem to take more water flow.

I thought about the same thing for my DASA SS 850.
I came to think about one think. Would the engine flow more water, and get cool if he opened the 2 center fittings on the head, and put these 2 over board?

It would flow the same volume, just at a lower velocity if you added more lines just to the head. As long the water has the same size or larger exits as it does intakes it would be a very minimum change in flow (due to back-pressure/friction/turbulence). If you want to flow a larger about of water tap the pump larger or add 3rd fitting and do the same to the head.

DASA put 4 pissers on the head for a reason.... for the 1200. they use the same head shell for all the motors. the 850 should not use all 4. your over cooling it if you do and you wont see the power you should be seeing.

thanks for the feedback guys... I tend to think I am actually flowing too much water or too fast... only reason I think that is, if I was flowing too little water the water coming out of the pissers would be super hot. my pisser water is just warm so I am thinking that the transfer of heat is not happening. I am thinking about inserting a restricter in the lines on the outboard side of the cooling lines. slowing the flow rate may help with heat exchange and cooling.

However, I can tell you that my motor friggin rips. It hits really hard and the plugs look great. Yesterday I went for a few flat water backflips... 1 - 3/4 and 3 - 2/3. Trim made a huge difference, but this motor is really sick!!

Awesome... glad to hear this... thanks bro

Well get ya dialed in. Pisser temps and the infrared gauge will help us figure it out. If my damn motor would get here we could do two at the same time sat morning

If your goal is to cool the motor down Its not going to happen by adding restricters to the overboard pissers. The only time slowing the flow of water across a hot surface would help with heat transfer is if the surface was instantly boiling the water when it hits it. Think of it as drops of water dancing around on a frying pan (they take a few seconds to turn to water vapor), if they stuck to the surface of the pan they boil off much much quicker.

I'm curious to see what you find out with the laser temp sensors, keep us posted

hmmm interesting.

well the motor runs sick. so I think I will leave it as is until I have the temp gun to check. I was told that these motors like to run at 175 degrees.

I tried to use a laser gun on my 850, as it allso gets hotter than my 701. But i got some messed up nr. 36 degress C.
A friend told my that thoese temp gun, dont work on blank surfaces. Wonder if you guys get some better readings or have another color engine :)

mine is anodized orange. But, there is a tape you can put on the head and cylinder to get a true reading.
