Daytona fly or drive dilemma

The wife can't go this year cause her contract disallows days off before or after a holiday (Martin Luther King Monday 18th). Means I'm stuck driving rental Suburban Wednesday after work, 14 hours to Daytona with my 14 year old boy as co-pilot. If anyone is near Pittsburgh, PA and is interested in sharing the driving responsibilities (you can use one of the trailer spots for your ski) please let me know.

Otherwise round trip flights are reasonable now at $204 each, but I then have to rely on my buddies who always decide last minute (a day or two before) whether they are going or not. I'm not riding down with them because they always go for like ten days and I can't burn that much vacation time.

Dilemma...

If you want to bring skis, drive. If you just want to experience Daytona and maybe test ride a few skis, fly. You really dont need a car down in Daytona, unless you want to go to Flatwater Friday, in which case, you can probably bum a ride from some buddy. There are people that drive much farther than 14 hours for daytona...It's really up to you on what you want to do.

Yea... this will be like my 8th year at the free ride, it's just that I suck at working 8 hours then jumping in a vehicle and driving for what seems like a life time. Really it's for the benefit of everyone else on the roadway that I not drive with one eye open in a massive SUV with a trailer loaded up with skis. So... really looking for someone to share in driving duties.

My Jeep gets like 10 miles to the gallon, rides rough as sh*t and doesn't have enough storage room. I've rented a Suburban three times now and they get decent gas mileage, leather interior and a crap ton of storage space. For $600 i think it makes a lot of sense.

I have a 2008 Suburban, I get about 15.5-17 doing 75mph with a single trailer. The newer suburbans are supposed to get much better gas mileage(no trailer) on the highway, 20+, they're direct injected now with variable valve timing. And they finally fixed AFM(from what I've heard).

On two lane 55mph my 2008 with get 18-21 with my single trailer or my 14ft boat.

good luck

Yea, these current model suburbans get well into 20+ mpg and that's with a pretty large 3 place Pirate Marine trailer. Another huge benefit is the 2 full length rear seats. It allows those not driving to stretch out and sleep and you can't put a price on that.

Fly in, if your buddys don’t go and you cant find anyone to pick you up at the airport there is always uber. Last few years I haven't rode at Daytona. I have just as much fun off the water shooting the poop with everyone.

Fly in and rent a civic when you get here. The rental is $600 but dont forget to factor the fuel. Probably $100-200 more there.

If bringing a ski, why trailer? Cant you rent a pickup of the same quality and put the ski in the bed? My silverado drives like a caddy.

@Vumad the truck thing isn't a bad idea. I was gonna bring both my SJ and my Phantom so my kid and I can ride at the same time and the dock box allows me to store extra crap like battery jump pack, wetsuits, beach cart tires, etc... I guess we've always done the Suburban thing cause usually it's me, the wife and both kids (daughter's in college now) so no fun for her ;)

@Autodiag17 I'm looking to leave Wednesday 13th around 5:00pm after work and then head back either Sunday 17th or Monday 18th.

Daytona is 1/14-17. The event pass is good for those days. Its $30 for a month pass if you ride outside of those days, and i believe the regular zone is a different spot. You have to be fully legal for the regular zone but not the event. Its the only time you are going to have the chance to meet that many people and see that many setups. Its too cold to ride anywhere else so the event is probably the biggest in the country.
