tore this old 701 down, its got some peppering of the pistons.

can I continue to use this top end? or do the pistons need to be replaced?

I think ive fixed what caused the lean condition, but wonder if I can still use these?

I would run them if its an old motor you dont care that much about. Id take a good look at the sides of the pistons. The walls look good though so your probably A-ok. You caught that baby just in time.

It looks like some foreign material up top. Show a pic of the head/domes.

I will get pics of the head later, it looks perfect.

the stock that came off looked perfect, and the westcoast head I put on there looke perfect when I removed it.

the lo speed circuit on the carb was clogged, made the boat nearly impossible to start, but it would run from 50%-100% throttle, and I rode it a few times like that, with 170 psi, and advanced timing and an msd enhancer.

BUT, I bought the engine used, so it could have happened before as well, I never looked inside it before I started running it.

Mark44,

because I built the boat the night before the trip to LOTO 2 years ago, I spent more time working on it that weekend than riding it.

I yanked that engine out shortly after returning home.

obviously, I didnt realize the lo speed circuit was clogged.

I was fighting so many little problems from a hurried half azzed build, I was just happy it ran at ALL.

haha

Oh yeah, I just remembered, I had the wrong plugs in it too, westcoast head, with the HS plugs in it, that was the OTHER reason it was really hard to start.
