Merry Christmas guys and gals!

Do any of you have a link or other recommendation for a Dial Gauge for setting Ignition Timing with the spark plug hole adapters?

waxhead: I am looking at that same spark plug hole dial indicator on the stateside ebay. But while I can see how it can be used to find top dead center, I don't know how to achieve 15 degrees B(efore)TDC by using it.

It expresses itself in terms of mm, not degrees.

Additionally, I don't see how I can tell if when the plug sparks if the flywheel is off.

I know this can't be magic, but I am having trouble finding info on it and although my oem Yamaha Superjet Service Manual describes the Dial Indicator for engine tuning under the Special Tools section, no where does the manual say how to use the dial indicator or how to time the engine.

If you have any good links for timing the Yamaha 94 701cc Superjet, will you please share them?

augustaf: Thank you for your reply. I am just replacing the stock stator with another stock stator because I burned up the lighting coil by running two bilge pumps at once. It looks to me that once you remove the stator and replace it, you need to recheck the timing. I will look degree wheel, but I still won't know when the plug sparks without the stator on will I?

The piston is 1.496mm down the bore at 15 degrees
Well now, that's news I can use! Thank you waxhead!!!!
I just went through the genuine oem Yamaha FX-1 FX700 Super Jet SJ700 1994-1995 Service Manual and it repeatedly but solely refers to ignition timing as at 1,200 rpm 15 Degrees BTDC and at 3,500 rpm 21 degrees BTDC.

So I found this online calculator:

http://www.dansmc.com/mc_software2.htm

But it requires that the stroke be known, which of course my oem manual does not list.

Merry Christmas waxhead!

You are overthinking all of this!

There are marks on both the stator and the engine cases used for lining up your timing. There is rarely need to do anything more than this.

If your stator doesn't have any marks, it is aftermarket and needs to go in the trash. Sad but true.

Well now, that is even more news that I can use! Thank you Mr. OCD!!! But which of the three marks do I use? Should I assume that the line is TDC and that the line below it (assuming that the engine rotates in a counterclockwise manner) is 15 degrees BTDC?

You use the center line exactly as indicated on the above.

I can’t remember what exact degree of advance or retard that the dots indicate but the line is the factory timing mark. Set it and forget it.

Thank you OCD, will do. And yes it is an aftermarket stator. I will be sending in the oem stator to jetskisolutions for a rewound lighting coil...

DSC03795- lq.jpg DSC03795.JPG View attachment 346434 I can't believe I missed that mark and case indicator. Thank God, that I take disassembly photos. And thank God for OCD. And Merry Christmas to everyone!

P.S. The Chinese aftermarket stator has the raised place for the mark, but no mark. I will transfer that over from the oem before I send it in to Jetskisolutions for rewire.
