Super Jet Differences in running lean vs running rich

If it blubbers like a schoolgirl trying to guzzle a quart of beer, then it's too rich
If it falls flat on the line (like someone punched you in the stomach).. It's too lean

^What he said.

I used to have a hard time telling, but after a few times of feeling a lean hesitation it was way easier to tell the difference between the two.

Dont forget this is for the pilot test only not to see if mains are rich or lean.

Not only the pilot but the pop off as well. It happens quite a bit that a lean or rich low end condition is cause by incorrect pop off pressure and is not a result of the jetting. Example you have a lean condition like DAG mentioned, (hit the gas and it seems like someone punched you in the gut (ha)). Lots of time its because the pop off pressure is too high and the engine has to increase rpm before it has enough intake drawl to open the needle and seat. Lots of time with this condition the plugs will not look lean at all because all the circuits are regulating fuel as they should be once the needle and seat open. The opposite can happens too. Say you have a bad low end blubber (rich). Once you "blip" the throttle a few times and clear it out the engines pulls well. This could just as often be caused by too low of pop off pressure. As you are idling around the needle and seat are staying open and causing the engine to load up with fuel. Not nearly saying a low end problem is always caused by the pop off just reminding everyone to consider it too when diagnosing.
