Just curious...

How long would you expect a new yamaha engine to last that has all the normal bolt-ons? It is tuned pretty good, and I run it hard but never more than 5-10 seconds at WOT....

What is normally the first thing to go? In normal wear in our freestyle type riding- how many hours can you normally expect to get out of a top end? I am sure this can vary widely, but I am just looking for an average type number....

I use amsoil dominator at 40:1 and am running 185 psi in the cylinders on an 07' superjet... I put about 30 hours on it last year (stock) as I got it in July.... and have put about 30-40 hours on it this year with all the new mods...

I completely beat the living crap out of a stock 62t B piped motor for 6!! seasons and it finally blew. That included 2 or 3 Daytona trips and some sinkings in fresh and salt water.

What finally killed it was when I sank it in Daytona and could not get it started. Drove home in a blizzard and then let it sit for a week.

It took 3 more tanks to grenade it.

I would say new top end every 3 summers around here if you want to avoid blowing it. New crank every 6 maybe?

Yamaha rules!!!!!!!!

Cranks can last for years, needle bearings can last for years. Those are the only moving parts so to speak. Cranks can fail at any time, so can needle bearings. There are way too many variables to give an good answer.

Piston Rings can fail, pistons can fail from improper jetting or octane. siezure or detonation.

You can stick a piston running out of gas.

Bendix can go out taking out your flywheel and in some cases destroying the cases.

Water can hydrolock and engine bending crank rod.

Heres my plugs after I got home yesterday... seems a little rich to me... I havent changed my plugs in about 40 hours of operation... how often do you guys change plugs? I used to only change them once a year.... but I am riding a lot more than I used to now since I got the sj....

Oh and the ski starts and runs awesome.... if the plugs didnt look rich to me I would not have expected it...

I did notice a little chip off the insulation on the one plug... is normal? maybe it came like that...

I would say a little rich. Should be chocolate milk colored.

I change mine about twice or 3 times per summer if I'm riding a lot.

Our type of throttle popping riding seems to love new plugs. You will actually notice a diff after putting them in IMO.

i can tell a big difference in old and new plugs. i see that posted a lot that only changed once a year or less. i cant do that, i probably change mine every 4 or 5 days of riding and i can always feel a little more response in the new ones.

cool... I have put about 30-40 hours on my ski of hard brapping already this year... I'll switch them out... ... I wanted to run a little rich... I was told since the motor has the stock yamaha clearance with the rings and stuff that if I tried to lean it out a little I would be asking for trouble...

yeah.... those f'ers sealed off the screws... had to drill a hole in the cap they put on there and then keep using slightly bigger bits to kinda catch the plug and strip it out of the hole... it wasnt the best way to do it but it worked... then I put in the protec adjustment screws (nice setup).....

it does rip... prob just running a little rich and should be replacing the plugs every month or 2....
