Super Jet Engine problem - Blew a cylinder - Im confused.... HELP!!

Hey guys,

I have a SJ with a 701. Cyl have been ported by Tim Judge (Still @81mm) with girldled head (175 psi) and a Factory Type 9 dry pipe. I built this engine about 3 years ago, rode it for 2 seasons and the ski sat all last year. So I pull out the ski a few days ago, drain the old gas and refill it with new gas. Ski doesn't want to idle. I prime it a few times and fire it up again. This time it revs up super high so I hit the kill switch. I do this a few more times and it other won't idle, or it revs up really high. This is all done out of water.

Based on this, I pull the carbs (Riva Powebomb 48mm) and take them apart to clean thinking they are probably gummed up from sitting. So carbs get cleaned and put back on... same issue. Prime it and fire it up... engine revs up super high so again I kill it with the stop switch. Figure I might as well put it in water and try to play around with it. (Both Cyl at this point are 175 psi)

So I put the ski in the lake now, fire it up and it runs perfect. Idles properly, doesn't rev up and runs like it always has in the past. I give it a good warm up and start riding for about an hour with no issues. All pissers are flowing freely and no issues of over heating.

After the hr ride I load the ski in my truck, go to fire it up to get some of the water out of the exhaust.... as I have always done in the past. Once again the ski doesn't want to idle and revs up super high again. I immediately kill the engine with the stop button. Fire it up again and the engine revs out once again. This time I push the stop button and it doesn't turn off. I then pull the lanyard and the engine keeps reving out at pretty much wide open throttle. Thinking the start stop switch is pooched, I rip off both plug wires which does absolutely nothing. Engine keeps reving out for about 15 - 20 sec and finally dies.

I figure at this point the engine probably seized because it was out of the water. I pull the plugs to find the front cyl plug is covered in aluminum..... Engine is not seized so I do a compression test and sure enough the front cyl is blowing 120 psi. Rear Cyl is still at 175.

I haven't had a chance to pull the engine apart yet but I am lost as to how this happened....

1) Why is the engine reving out when outside of the water but not when it is in the water? Possible air leak somewhere?
2) How does the ski possibly keep running @ wide open throttle even after I pull the lanyard and plugs wires?

Only thing I can think of is the engine was so hot that it was dieseling. But again for the hr I was running it, all pissers were flowing fine and engine was not over heating. Even if it is dieseling... how does it rev out at wide open throttle??

Like I said I'm lost.... Please help! Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

you have an air leak, and it was dieseling.
sounds stupid but next time just hold the thottle open and hit the stop button and i'll kill the engine.

Hey i know this thread is old but i had the same issue. Scared the s*** out of me. If anyone has this problem put your choke all the way on that will kill it or covering your air intake will work too. Also putting your fuel nob to the off position wouldn't hurt. hope this helps!! and if you recently swapped out out a throttle cable double check it. It might have shifted after a few rides.
