I'm Looking for some advice on what i should do to my engine this offseason i was originally going to Port and Put some heads on but the combined cost will put me at about $900 (500- Port, 400- Head/Domes.)

Now the money isn't the issue its if i'm already spending that much for X amount of power if i spend a little more and get 3X the power. what are my alternatives, say buying a whole motor from kgroup or xmetal works(800cc), i still want pump gas and great reliability

I just really would like to build it right the first time and not find out after I'm done another $900 would have made ten times the ski

Thanks everybodys opinions are encouraged!!

Just my opinion (based on 4 years experience screwing around with home-built engines and pieced-together engines).....run what you already have for a while longer.
In the meantime, save for the motor that you really want. Buying several intermediate steps will get a lot more expensive than doing it right the first time.
Oh, and talk to a few different builders and let them give you ideas for engine options.
You could get your core engine package built and gradually add on components, such as total loss, better reeds, better carbs, higher compression, a mag pump, etc.

The best way would be for you to personally compare motors by riding skis with them.
Short of that, talk to riders that have done so.

Also, talk to the builders you are considering. A nice phone conversation ought to give you some sort of impression.
Does he sound like he knows what he's talking about? Is he just trying to sell you stuff? Can he explain to you what his engine mods/packages do?
Does he dog other builders ?(would be a huge turn-off for me).
While this seems somewhat unrelated to "best bang for your buck", I think a good builder should give off a good vibe to you. You're spending hard earned cash, be comfortable with whom you are giving it to.
Again, JMHO.

Im in the same boat right now. i have a nice SN that i built from the ground up and i love it, but im in iraq right now and want to build another ski when i get home, so ive started the shopping process right now. trying to figure out where to go with it, want to have one nice ski and one decent one as a back up/friend loner. Figure ill probably take all my nice bits ie new B pipe, new ada head etc and build my new ski, while replacing with cheaper stuff for my spare. but as far as motor base i will be following this post attentively for peoples oppinions...lol at least when i can get access from here. so lets get some more suggestions, phone calls arent really an option from here so some oppions from people who have done all this would be great.

the new x-scream motor should be awesome!!!

my advice would be to go with the x-scream as I did my own build and its a ton of work to save a little money. in the end I would have had a better motor if I had gone this route instead. I am still making improvements after a year.

We build to suit, any way you want. Most overseas and out of country we build complete with no cores due to shipping costs, most in the states send in the engine parts to be used for their builds.
Contact Radney at the shop for quotes.

I have been kicking around getting some motor work done and after reading a lot and and figuring out what I want out of my boat I'm going to have X scream build me a nice motor for the surf. All you will hear about them is reliability and power are awesome and they will work with you for whatever you want done. I'm on the fence about there Stock stroke billet cyl now for a surf boat. I'll know more very soon I hope. You cant go wrong with X scream.

If you are looking for the best bang for buck, try working with what you have. You didn't really list what you are running. But start with cylinder porting like you said and running high enough compression to run race gas. I know you said you want to run pump gas. Higher compression is always the cheapest power. Your head could possibly even be decked enough to achieve the compression. Cheap mod.

Any of the aftermarket big bore cylinders/stroker cranks will net you an easy 150HP on pump gas, will tear your arms off, and will set up back 5-7K(and likely more) by the time you are done, with crank/cylinder, ignition, carbs, exhaust and everything else you need to complete the package.

It all boils down to how much you want to spend.

Reliablility? Any reputable builder will tell you a good build is plenty reliable, but will always need maintainance. Depending on use, annual teardowns are good preventive maintainance.

If he has the cash why not go with something that will net him major power? If you have the cash you should look into a billet cyl. X metal makes a big 7 port and dasa makes a cyl also. I would give them a call and talk to someone in person. there are plenty of people on here telling you to who they think you should go with. Call a builder and see what they can offer you and giver you prices and what you get for it. X scream builds anything from an awesome 701 stock ported super jet motor to a craxy 200+ hp beast.

Yep,

For sure, a big bore stroker is light years of power away from a stock cylinder non-stroker.

I wasn't sure of what kind of budget he was wanting to spend. $900 seemed like what he was looking at, I figured $2-3000 might not be.

With a good builder what you end up with as much power as you can want to buy. It is that simple.

It is pretty much up to you on what you want to end up with.
