Flywheels (Charging) - Stock lightened VS Aftermarket

I am building a frakenstein motor over the winter, and got a great hookup to get my stock flywheel lightened.

I have seen the aftermarket charging flywheels for $400-$500, and wondered if they were really worth that large of an investement, compaired to a stock flywheel that has been lightened.

The motor is a 61x case / 760 Cylinder, with a Factory B limited pipe, and single SBN44.

Do anyone know how much lighter than a stock flywheel, the MSD total loss flywheel is?

After all, there is pretty much widespread agreement, at least IMO, that a total loss flywheel makes a major difference.

they really are a lot lighter especially when the ring gear falls off of the RAD ones.

IMO not worth the money - If you were wanting total loss and had money to burn then sure but just for the extra snap- I would pass.

MSD TL FW - 1lb 12oz
Aftermarket charging fw - 2.5lbs or so.
Lightened stocker - still over 3lbs
Stock FW - a bit under 4 lbs
 
I'm sure there is probably a noticeable gain going with an aftermarket over a lightened stock flywheel, but I doubt it's worth $450 and the thought of the flywheel going bad and tearing up my motor which seems pretty common is enough for me to save that money and put it towards TL down the road. my .02.

You can't go wrong with the total loss flywheel. It's well worth the money for the added snap. I thought I had snap before, but the TL proved me wrong! Being able to dial in your curves and set individual cylinder timing is a bonus too... ;)

i run a rad on my sj bigbore it is definately pretty snappy- when my stator started coming apart i was on vacation and just said screw it and kept riding until it just about wouldnt start and sounded like rod knock- stator chunks chewed up whole flywheel pretty bad- ringgear and inside magnets grooved pretty rough- cleaned up flywheel with sandpaper and am still riding with it works just fine- so in MY experience my rad flywheel is pretty tough- on my buddies boat stator died and hammered his lightened stock flywheel- he put on a spare stocker and said he felt no difference- i stole my rad flywheel from a buddy for no $$$- i wouldnt buy one for $500 for sure- that said if your motor was down already for something else id lighten the stocker- otherwise go ride.
