Utilizing another part that you may have laying around or about to throw out.
If not then someone else has one or several just laying around.
The OEM Yamaha exhaust head pipe FREEZE PLUGS.
The head pipe commonly found on all Raiders, Wave Ventures, Blaster 2's, XL's, And GP's. Does not matter if it was a 701, 760, the freeze plugs are all the same.
You will need:
1) OEM Yamaha head pipe, (they have 4 freeze plugs)
2) 2 short bolts to replace the long ones that held the oil pump
3) Hammer
4) Short flat tip screwdriver or punch
5) Long flat tip screwdriver or pry bar
6) 1211, or Blue loctite...
(*If you want to seal the freeze plug and 2 bolt threads,... although not needed. I
tested the seal by filling the front cover with fuel, after an hour, No leaks.)
7) Freeze plug driver, (3/8's extension, socket, anything that fits the freeze plug)
(I used a 3/8's" X 1/2" extension adapter.)
*the install I did was on a 760 front cover, the flywheel bolt depth is the same on the 701.
This works on both the 701/760.
1) Tap on one side of the freeze plug (small flat tip screwdriver) to rotate it around enough to grab it with the long screwdriver or pry bar.
2) Pry the freeze plug out and clean it up
3) I measured the depth of the flywheel bolt to the outer base of the front cover in relation to the thickness of the freeze plug. Determining that you safely have 1/16"-1/8" of freeze plug drive depth.
4) Tap in the freeze plug (it doesn't take a lot of force), not exceeding that outer lip depth. I set the outer lip depth on the one I installed to about 1/32". Install your 2 short bolts.
