Other From motocross to stand-ups only

Hey everyone,

Basically used to have 735 SJ RN that I sold a few years ago to focus on motocross only. I'm starting to lose the desire for mx and I am not into trail riding so much.

I live in Jax, Fl, about 20 minutes from the water so access is nice. I surf as well and made it a point to surf as much as I can. In between I can hit some surf and we have a ton of flat water areas to ride in.

Obviously, I need some type of rush:)

I had both for a while but I was spread thin. For mx, all the tracks are at least an hour away and I am not sure if I am into hitting the jumps anymore.

It's been a tough decision process for sure and I am still processing the desire to stop riding. Jumping a jet ski in water doesn't hurt as much for the most part.

Anyone have a similar experience with switching over from MX due to injuries/fear?

All opinions/ thoughts welcomed...maybe u guys/gals went through a similar experience with other extreme sports.

Thanks!

Welcome back John, still can't believe you left in the first place. It was wierd seeing your old SJ at Daytona last year without you.

I found a group of riders in Charleston that are all ex MX'ers. They love dirt still but say it just got too hard to land on.

The funny thing is, they all ride sxr's in the surf like they were still on bikes. No surf style whatsoever, lol.

I grew up riding Glamis, Buttercup, and Ocotillo wells. About 7-8 years ago I got rid of my YZ because I knew I could not risk getting hurt and missing work, around the same time I picked up a 650 and have been sliding on the water ever since. I really wish I didnt get rid of my bike. Especially when going to pismo. Now I am looking for a quad to tow my ski back and forth from the water.

Funny how getting a quad to MX riders is equivilant of riding a couch for standup guys.

As for other sports just slowed down a little not going for big drop offs and stay out of the parks on the snow anymore.

Still slap a curb, a lip, or a rail like a mofo.

im coming off dirt aswell, however i still ride but ive been doing it way too long needed something new and standups are my new thing definately a nice break a vest is all you need and its nice not sweating your ass of and swallowing roost, ive also noticed a slight increase in the financial depatrment because you dont need to pay to ride but it equals out because you can spend a ton of cash of aftermarket stuff

I'm in the process of selling off the bikes too. Got blown off a landing and scared myself pretty good last summer and the fact that out track was muddy 90% of the time and wrecked the other 10%. I hear ya about being spread thin, MX racing, Ski racing and Ski freestyle (+work, babies and dogs) meant while I was pretty good at all of them, I wasn't getting really good at any of them. So out go's the bike and SXR to pay for a tasty DASA 885 BOB Gen 3!

I was a die hard mx racer and freestyle rider for 18 years before breaking both wrists training for my 2003 freestyle tour for Redbull and for the upcoming race season here in Wisconsin. I had over ten hours of surgery to plate and pin my wrists together and was told if I break my right wrist again they'd have nothing to fix. It is assembled with 11 screws and a titanium plate 2/3rds the length of my forearm.

So I quit, gave up my pro license and sold all my stuff and got into bodybuilding instead.

Now I'm involved in a sport I wish I would've gotten into 10 years ago and have had more fun than ever!

Save your body and put it all into skis man:)

I got into jetskiin 4 years ago coming from a hardcore mx background. I went to drocs place with my bike one day to ride his mx track, he has a banshee. He also has a river beside his house. So we ripped the dirt for a while and he told me he was gonna rip his jetski now, twas the first time i seen such a thing. He was doin all sorts of tricks, super cool! I had to have one.

I always love ripping my dirt bike but theres somethin strange about the water that makes me never want to give up skiin. I pretty much didnt ride the bike for two years after i bought my ski. Now i make time for both of them. I live in canada so skiin season is short, in the spring i rip the bike, summer is for jet skis and fall is back to the bike. I will never get rid of either of them. Dont sell any of your toys man.

great replies guys...I appreciate all the insight.

good to hear from you boykid:)

it was a hard decision letting go of the ski but it has been a super struggle with mx...very fun sport but the risks are high. I've had many, many crashes and a pretty bad one about 1.5yrs ago. Landed wrong on a 65' table to step down and was thrown about 15-20 feet in front of the bike. I don't remember cause I blacked out. Broke 3 ribs and a bruised tailbone as well. Had a crash that resulted in knee surgery as well.

MX is addicting but I have other interests such as surfing, drums and guitar(recently) that always take a back seat to it. Time, money, and the risk of getting hurt are tuggin on my brain but i still need some airtime it seems. I'd rather not have any long term issues from a dirt nap since I have other things that I enjoy.

Surfing will always be my true love. It's a pure feeling that only a small portion get to experience. I'll admit that my SJ started to take a back seat to everything cause I was spread so thin. I always seemed to turn to MX but now my compass points towards surfing.

Anyways...I'll keep my gear if I do stop and just sell the bike. I can always get a new one and that's the same thing I said about the ski.

I am going to try and make the freeride but it's not looking good.

Thanks again...there are definitely some sweet skis out there guys:) BRAP!!!

A lot of the new skis are way more fun to really surfride on if you make the freeride take my ski for a spin , with you coming from a surfing background I think you'll dig it .

I grew up racing MX. My family and I devoted a lot to the sport! Ended up with a bunch of broken bones and then joined the Marine Corps and sold my bike. I then got into skis and rode with Boyer, Savannah Scott and the rest of the crew for years in the surf. I got out of the corps Jan 2011, moved back to MI, bought a new bike in Feb. thinking I would pick up MX again right where I left off since there isnt a lot of good surf options for me back in Michigan. I put a total of 9 hours on that bike this year! I love the sport but like you I only have the desire to be on the track. I hate riding trails. The sport isnt the same as it was when I was racing with my family and hanging out with a lot of friends at the track. I too have lost almost all desire to ride, but for some reason I havent been able to bring myself to selling the bike yet.

I still have my ski and love that sport so much more, even on flatwater. Although, my surf built RN is a little heavy! Ofcourse I would rather be in surf! I have thought about selling the bike and buying a a/m hull, but i am getting married in June and working on putting in an offer on a house. So that will have to wait.

If I was you, I would sell the bike. Like you said the tracks are far, N. FL MX is the closest, then Savannah. You have surf and a great group of guys to ride with!!!!!! If I could, I would move back down there right now and forget about dirt bikes!

P.S. I think we have meet before (I rode JAX 2007-2010).

Edit: I forgot to mention the risk of injury is so much higher in MX, I have just as much fun on skis if not more with a much lower risk on injury. Plus you get to enjoy the weather, no sweating your ass off doing motos, just nice weather and water.
This thread has me considering selling my bike. I just dont want to lose my ass on it. Its paid for but the used bike market is in the crapper, Maybe it will pick up spring time.

i went from moto/downhill mountainbike racing and surfing to jetsking and surfing back to moto and surfing with a little bit of jetskiing here and there...keep your bike..at the very least it will keep u in shape...i can ride for an hour strait on my ski pinned but i get tired after a couple laps on a rough moto track...jetskiing is soooooo much easier its nice to be challenged riding moto...surf, ride moto and skis and you will be a better off..skills for all three tranfer over to eachother..
