fuel tank sucking in on itself

i was out on my 1991 sj last weekend, and noticed that it seemed to be starving for fuel, so I took it back to the shore and pulled the hood, and noticed the tank was or had imploded as if it wasn't vented, so I pulled the vent line off the tank and it went back to normal, I noticed there is a check valve in line, what do you guys think would cause this?

The check valve is either no good... Or on backwards.
Pull it off and blow through it to see if it's good

Ive seen this happen in an x2 with a single 44.

Check valve was backwards.

X3 Check valve is bad. We have replacements in stock for $6.50

thanks guys, I went out and bought a new check valve haven't had time to test maybe tomorrow.

Blow through the tube to make sure nothing is obstructing it.
