Girdle or non-girdle head???

I’ve got a 15 superjet and was wanting to order an ada head and was curious as to if i should get a non-girdle head or a girdle head and the reason behind the two!

Good question... im interested to see peoples views on this.

I was always lead to believe that when you tune a SJ and increase compression etc there was a chance of the cylinder cracking so that's why you alwys ran a girdled head.

A lot of builds I've seen lately don't use a girdled head any more.

Get the girdle. 61x cylinders are supposed to be the most prone to cracking. However, I would get a @holeshot head. His girdle kit is significantly better then ada.

air blair

you are the reason
Girdle it. Seen quite a few cylinders break St base now and the common cause was no girdle on it. Blowsion sells them two piece girdle kits but ada is just fine as well

Girdle head unless you have a dasa cylinder which you can use a non girdle.
I like the Ada style one pc studs, some heads used two PC studs which like to get stuck in the case threads.

If you have never had girdle head on your motor, you will probably have to tap out your case threads to remove loctite used by Yamaha. This will take some time. And you still may need to run two washers under the acorns. Do not bottom out the acorn nuts, have to bring your ocd game on this step.

Related to this, how does one tap out the case holes without just dropping all the removed loctite/material down the hole? Some of those holes continue down into the case cavity, don’t they?

Its best done with the motor on a bench. I am pretty sure those holes are not open to the inside, you would have massive air leak problems.

The non-girdled has an advantage beyond cost. Removing the head releases the pressure off the cylinder and it is possible to develop a base gasket leak. It's also faster and easier to install the first time. It is possible to run the girdled head without the girdled kit if you want the fast install for the weekend and don't mind being made fun of.

I have a girdled head.

I run a girdled head without the girdle kit just for that reason.

How so?[/QUOTE]

The girdle kit has seperate nuts holding the cylinder down without relying on the head. See Above^

Do you have a link, I have not seen this and am curious. Curious how it all torques etc. while acting as a girdle tying the head-cylinder to cases, a picture may explain the benefits and help OP make a choice.

^^then you would not have a "girdle" adding to the torsional and shear strength of the cylinder. OP, I use "girdled" heads on my engines in my Blasters because I run Coffman Rocket pipe that are high and heavier than stock. Have seen a lot of cracked cylinders over the years from increased side loading, that is why I use them. Others may have other reasons that I am not aware of. Have a great day

Exactly. The photo illustrates that the head can be used as shown, with the girdle kit, or leave the case/cylinder bolts in and don’t use the studs. Isn’t that what the past several posts have been trying to clarify?

Ah i read more carefully and i see, no, that’s not the point. The mucked up quote markup thwarted me.

Fwiw, the blowsion girdle kit—not that i suggest buying from blowsion—is also one part to hold the cylinder to the case, another part to hold down the head.
