gnarly vibration under foot tray

LAst time I was out it seemed to get progressively worse the more I rode, and progressivly louder...almost like a growling noise. Would it be the bearing in the impellor shaft? The ski is less than a year old...

mine did this in the middle of a ride. I stopped and rolled it but never found anything. when I pulled the pump later I found some fishing line
went away after that. pull the grate and look really close in there.
You may have picked up some fishing line

check the pump for trash. my sxr goes crazy if theres any piece of trash stuck between the impeller & housing. Its not fun diging out a 1/4 inch piece of wood in the middle of the lake.:). check you pump really good.

ya I figured it out. Its from when I got a strap stuck in there, it bent the impellor a litttle, and the more i rode it the more it wore down the pump housing, so eventually there was play between the prop and pump so it was rattle around in there. Just need new bearings and impellor shaft, and then get the pump and prop refinished.

That is funny that you had that. My SXR has a vibration noise and it sounds like it is coming from the hood latch or something. Mine is only a year old. My friends ski is a few years older than mine and it has the same sound. I figured that is was just something with the latch. Now I am wondering if I have damaged something in the pump. The lake I ride does have a lot of debri.

turns out the bearings were shot and the impeller shaft got bent. It's going to be about $600 to fix...

i think mine was caused from a tie down strap getting stuck in the pump then it just got progressively worse, but I suggest pulling off your pump and spinning the impeller freely just to see if it hits at all so you can fix it before it gets bad. Only takes a bout 15 min to get the pump off.

Will be pulling it tonight and see if I find anything. What did you notice about the bearings?

um $600?? your not gonna pay that are you? is it a sj? i see those pumps go for $200 with drive shaft. just pick up a used one. i found one foe $200 plus shipping with shaft and great cond skat prop. do it this way and its just a straight drop in.

its an SXR (which would explain why its in the SXR forum ;) ) and i can't seem to find complete pumps anywhere..!! If you knoow of one let me know, but its $200 to get it re-sleeved, gotta send it from Toronto to New Jersey, get a new impeller, as well as impeller shaft and bearings.

Rollin, The bearings seemed ok, but there was water in behind the bearings and in the vacant space between the pump cone and bearings, there was also a little rust and some metal filings. the tolerance between the impeller and the pump is 7/1000" so everything has to be perfect in there

Sweet. Thanks for the info. I have taken pumps apart on old polaris skiis and such but never on my SXR. Should be fun!!

Well I pulled my pump apart tonight and did not find anything funny. The bearing under the cone looked pristine. I do not have a prop puller nor the bearing puller for the pump so I left it at that. My wear ring looks a little beat up but the prop has no dings. The clearance is within manufacturers specs. I think that the grooves are just from junk going through. I started it on the hose and noticed that the vibration still seems to come from the engine compartment/hood latch area. It only happens when I am at WOT. Idle it sounds normal. Like I said, my friend's SXR is that same. Well anyway here is some pics of the pump for S**ts and giggles :headbang:. I guess the search will still continue.

:fingersx:....j/k. I was actually surprised to see how good of shape the prop was. There is always all sorts of driftwood and crap floating in the lake that we ride at.

Anyone else have info on noise sxr pumps?

From day 1 on my SXR (bought new), the 1st ride the pump has been noisy. It doesn't really vibrate, but kind of sounds like a blender, 1/2 throttle to full throttle. On pwctoday no one really has a clue, except the fact they says its normal.

TO me it isn't normal. My 15 y/o Fx1 sounds better. Im going to be pulling it in a bit, anything to replace? Are there aftermarket ceramic bearings to throw in the pump?

that is how sxr's sound. do a search, your blender comparison is what other people have said also. some people say it sounds like rocks in their pumps.

... or maybe your blender sounds like an SXR

Wave-

I did search, hence the time gap between my post and this thread. When I searched it only came up with this thread. Can you point me to other threads?

Take the shaft to a local straightener...(should be about $30 to straighten)
You can get the bearings at any local bearing distributor for cheap also...

Wave has it right. It is not so much a vibration but a noise issue. Mine still does it and so does every SXR that I have rode.

Since I have owned my SXR (2005), it has made a odd noise when it is fired up out of the water. The only thing I can liken it to is like putting a piece of paper into a moving fan blade..lol. Sounds like something is flapping around in there. From all the other SXR's I have heard and what I have read, it's normal. I was used to my old Yamahas; they were quiet until the housing started to swell...
