god dam i suck at changing tires.

as a tech in a bike shop i always hate when a mx wheel comes in!
i went through 5 tubes on 1 wheel once ..after the first 2 i just wanted to see how many they would give me
they dont ask me to do dirt tires anymore !
i have since learned a secret...
str8 dish wash soap and the tire just slides on

MX tires are a pain in the AZZ!! I have had my share of pinched tubes back in the day. We finally got pretty good at installing a new set of rubber without problems. I liked the long Motion Pro tire spoons and used plenty of soap & water solution.

x2 on motion pro long spoons, no air in tube, get rim lock side started first and slowly work around. I used to change 50 plus on the bike a weekend at the races(pinched tubes came out of my pocket,so you learn quick how not to pinch one. Baby powder on the tube will keep chaffing down.

SO TEMPTING!!!!

I'm telling you, you WILL thank me for it.

I have like 8 friends that saw mine being used and bought one, and loved them so much they told more people and THEY bought them. the HF near me now stocks them by the pallet load instead of one or two like they used to and still cant keep them in stock.

they are worth it. you can also change trailer tires ( jetski or bike hauler) with it.

umm.. i mustve done something REALLY wrong cause i just pulled the tire back off the rim and i ate away at the sidewalls/lip pretty good.

i didnt pinch the tube with my spoons... i poked a hole in it with the metal wiring inside the lip thats protruding through to the inside. holey crap! (pun intended, totally)

i have to go back to cycle gear tomorrow and put on my best puppy dog face to see if they'll exchange this for me. yikes.

what the hell are you doing?:chairshot:

there is NO reason you should be doing that kinda damage with tire levers.

Yep, there is a trick to getting that tube placed just right in the new tire. I always had to keep getting my fingers in there toward the last and making sure the tube had not slipped down. I would also sometimes use a heavy rubber mallet to pop the last few inches of tire down on the rim.

ive changed a few tires in my time.. never seen this happen before...

bad tire possible? or total saki stupidity?

I'm gonna vote for the latter. sorry dude.

no way the tire should do that from a lever unless you are fuggin mangling the thing trying to get the bead to pop over.

so how exactly does that midevil contraption work?

let the air out of the tire and clamp the rim on place and insert the bar through the center of the hub were the axle goes. ther is a large "lever" the you insert under the edge of the bead and brace against the center bar and rotate. viola! one side of the tire is off. now lift the tire and reinset the lever and repeat. presto tire is off.

there is a niffty bead breaker at the base for stubborn seated beads.

just reverse the procedure to install the tires. remember to soap the beads as usual. try putting a little air in the tube first. it helps keep it in the tire and away from the rim.

also...

remember that if you push the bead to the center of the rim opposite the side you are working, it will pop easier. rims are made with a "low spot" in the center for a reason.

for real..my buddy used to always make me feel bad..after me struggling for 10-15 minutes he would come over set the tire levers on the ground and do it with his hands:shrug:
