I was doing some slides when my ski mysteriously disappeared from underneath me and appeared sideways in front of me. I tried to hold on as best I could, but the grip slid right off the bar.

What adhesive is recommended to keep the grip on the bar? Contact cement?

True, but I was hoping on avoiding buying new grips. The grips on it are in good condition.

It's only an old '89 550. Not some fancy SN or something.

A buddy of mine reccomended Gorrilla glue to me for grips . . . . . . I tried it and I don't use anything else now. . . .

Another trick I use is to rough up the inside of the grips before intalling them.

I found a round spiraled wire brush about 3/4" dia by 5" long at HomeDepot, I spin it with my cordless drill and give the inside of the grips a quick brush to rough up the inside and they bond way better to the bars that way.

You could probably take a small wire parts brush and jam it in and out a few times to do the same thing, you're just trying to remove the slick surface from the inside of the grips so the glue has somethng to bind to.
