Has anyone checked baggage a hull before on a airline?

So I sold my black dvx1200 and the guy who bought it lives in Australia.
The import taxes and other fees are OUTRAGOUS!!!

As a example I did a duty calculator and for a ski for $999usd with a shipping cost of $500usd and insurance of $500usd he would have to pay almost $3,000aus which is around $2,500usd just in import taxes.
Imagine what a $30,000 ski air freight of $3,500 and insurance cost would be....crazy!

So I was thinking it would be waaaay cheaper if he flew here, pulled the engine out, wrapped up the hull, put the engine in a duffel bag and just checked it on to his return flight.
Has anyone ever done that before?

i think you can buy a business airplane ticket for 1000 dollar or sth. Then u can carry up to 2 meters and 100 kg or something.
maybe this can be an option...

Not a hull but I've checked in a complete 701 long-block going from Florida to Sweden. I used a hockey trunk on wheels. No problems!

Get a RubberMaid Container with wheels. Put the motor and anything else inside it. check it as luggage. Then check the hull with the handlepole and pipe inside it as a windsurfer.

That's Jays DVX traveling from the usa to the uk last year, just the bare hull. I could be wrong but im sure he said it was a close call and he him self would not be able to do it again as its been marked as a note on his passport.

also Australia are way more strict than the uk your not even allowed to take food from another country into theres.

it could be a big gamble with a top dollar set up

the motor if it is used i dont think they will allow on a plane bc of the gas. I just flew ny to cali for work and they stopped my lithium batteries tools and power tools with 0 gas in them and i cleaned them real well in check in under the plane. Going to aus im sure restrictions will be worse as ive shipped many things over there and its crazy restricted

Send it by boat. Way cheaper then by air freight.
Of course there could be still be some import taxes but the shipping is lower and in many cases you do not get import taxes especially with older used parts.

Cheapest way to send it will be by sea as part of a container load. He can list it on Uship and look for a good rate.

To get the duties lower, you can declare the value of the ski a lot lower than what it is really worth, but he will have to insure it for the same value as well.

You would receive the money in two parts, one for the lower amount for the ski, which is what the customs declared value would be. Then another higher amount, but don't declare this one.

when you check in your ski as luggage, wont you need to clear customs at the airport in the destination country?

i know the customs guys here would have a field day if they opened the duffel to find a ski in there!!
