300/440/550 Hello from NFG, I have some js550 questions

Just picked up a 85 js550. I rode one once a LOOOOOONG time ago, so I am excited to get on a "vintage" one now. I have been into board sports for many years, and I've always appreciated the stand up ski's.

It has had some aftermarket work (Kerker pipe?) and a new top end clearly at some point, but seems to run strong

I need to do some paint work and general clean up of course

Questions!

Do you guys recommend / has anyone installed a kill strap so that if you/when you fall off it kills the engine?

How do I ensure the water is drained out of it properly so I can winterize it?

How do I drain the crank case, and what kind of oil / how much should I put in it

What are the stabilizers called that go on the sides of the hull in the rear? My hull does not have them it appears, but I assume they help with stability?

what is the pin called that holds up the steering when I need to access the engine compartment? Mine is missing.

The tube that runs off the exhaust into the water is missing. Does it need to be there for pressure reasons in order to run properly? Or is it just a noise issue? Ideally I think I'd like it routed out the rear if its not too hard to do?

Thanks!
Chris

Do you guys recommend / has anyone installed a kill strap so that if you/when you fall off it kills the engine? - Yes, but you don't really need it - you can swim faster than this thing! - I only use mine in the ocean.

How do I ensure the water is drained out of it properly so I can winterize it? - Just look in the engine bay - if there's just little puddles of water don't worry about it, if more - shop vac!

How do I drain the crank case, and what kind of oil / how much should I put in it - It's a 2 stroke - don't put oil there!

What are the stabilizers called that go on the sides of the hull in the rear? My hull does not have them it appears, but I assume they help with stability? - Leave them off, forget they were ever there!

what is the pin called that holds up the steering when I need to access the engine compartment? Mine is missing. - It's part of the hood strap itself - the metal lever IS the pin.

The tube that runs off the exhaust into the water is missing. Does it need to be there for pressure reasons in order to run properly? Or is it just a noise issue? Ideally I think I'd like it routed out the rear if its not too hard to do? - Not really, just noise reasons. If you want want go to an automotive store - its something like 2" to 2 1/8" inside diameter tubing you'll need, and a hose clamp or two.

I am not going to ride it this winter becuase I need to do the clean up and paint, plus I'm not getting in until its warm. What I mean is, is there a specific process to drain the water from the water box and lines?

There's no oil for the lower end of the engine??? Every two stoke quad I've ever owned has definitely had gear oil or something like it for the bottom end.

John, thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for...

...chaos? Its Fair!
That's a good idea for winterizing and no oil in the crankcase. everything is lubed from the oil in the fuel. If your ski isn't premix, make it premix while your in the off season

2-stroke atvs and dirtbikes have oil in the bottom end for the transmission and clutch. Jetskis have neither so no need for oil in the bottom end, the oil fill looking thing on the front cover is just a inspection hole.
