HELP - best method to tighten flywheel bolt. Installing TBM Flywheel

installing my new TBM flywheel tonight.

I've heard conflicting methods of how to tighten down the flywheel bolt.

how do you do it?

- stuff a rope down the spark plug hole to hold the piston in place?

- put bolts in the threaded holes in the flywheel, and use a bar to hold the flywheel from spinning? I've done it this way with the stocker, but the TBM directions say not to do this.

- something else?

i've read a couple bad things with the rope trick (rope breaking, going into case), but this is what TBM directions say to do.

HELP
Thanks

use a 3/8 impact gun at the middle setting

same here! just make sure you use red locktight on the flywheel bolt.

Some other aluminium flywheel manufacturers also recommend putting the flywheel in boiling water before installing to make sure the aluminium expends properly.

thanks for the help, the TBM flywheel is in. I actually ended up doing the bolts / torque wrench w/ loctite red so i am sure of the torque on the bolt. the bolt (small leverage bolt, not center bolt) bent but the flywheel threads are still perfect. so it was a successful install.

friends airgun impact gun did not have adjustment so didn't want to use it.

Rope in the cyl works great, this way you can use the torque wrench and know that it is right. I have used the impact method in the past but was always concerned about over torque.

The best method is to use a solid piston stop tool threaded into the sparkplug hole!
Hey Chuck could you elaborate or speak to using such a tool? There was a previous thread that mentioned this idea but I thought that the force would be too locallized and would cause you to punch a hole in the top of the piston? If this is not true then these seem like a pretty cheap and useful tool.

Flywheel lock

I manufacture a tool to hold the flywheel while torquing. It doesnt apply any stress to the rod/ piston and is the safest method!
