650/X-2 Help for a heavy guy

I'm 40.. Just purchased an 89 650sx.. I bought one of these brand new.. I was in high school.. Had a couple 550 before as well.. I know how to ride.. I use to do a lot of freestyle... I was pretty good.I haven't been on a ski in 15 years. I've gained weight... Poor little ski is having a hard time getting me out of the water... It is bone stock.. No mods to the motor.. I have a J D ride plate coming.. Just added an J D Top Loader intake grate.. It has a Stainless impeller.. The ski runs out great... It just cant pull me up and out of the water.. I'm 250lbs.. It has no problem if I kneel in it to take off or even stand up when I take off from the beach.. But if I stand and spin the ski out and stand it up straight it just doesn't have the gutts to pull me out... Should I add some weight to the nose. I ordered a impeller cone nozzel from blowsion..

Any thoughts would be great.. And no I'm not going to put a bigger motor in it or buy anouther ski.. That would be way to easy.. I like my retro ski... Brings back a lot of good memories

trim the nozzle down and dont tilt the bars down leave them up learn to get your wieght forward,a little more power would help (pipe, bigger carb etc.)

Buy a treadmill

that or a yamaha 701 swap.

My bone stock x2 felt the same. Struggled down low to pull me out of the water. Had sufficient power once on plane. I'm about 220.

Im no kawi expert but they seem to lack in low end power. Worked good up top though.

Say on the throttle!!! Speed is your friend especially when jumping...get some straight bars to pull ya forward and keep your bars up against your waist....do not extend your arms...puts your weight back.

Keep riding, to hell with a teadmill, standups are a better workout! ...you'll have fun and welcome to the X! btw....don't add any weight.

It is a work out.. The first weekend I thought I was going to die.. I was in so much pain. week 2 was much better.. I love it.. Again it just getting the ski to lay down.. I'll have to keep trying diffrent ways to get it out of the hole.. It seems like sometimes the ski barks.. like its running really well.. and it will pull me out.. then other times it 's doggy.. seems like when it heats up, run for a while.. or maybe I'm just getting tired.. keep trying right!!!!!!!!!

at 250 lbs with a 650 x2 .. im sure its proped wrong, under powered ,and overloaded , nothing but power will help ..... once you ride an x2 with some power more matched to your size .. then you will see where the problem is .. I recomend going to WAVEDAZE 2012 where you can ride some x2's matched to your needs . ... if not .. start with a prop to get you out of the water :)

Not an x2 Just a 650 sx stand up... It has a stainless prop.. No clue what it is.. My hope was when my new ride plate comes in I was going to check to see what it had for pitch.. What is recommended for holeshot vs top end??

If by holeshot you mean bottom end then that usually comes by porting, pipe, high comp. head
the ride plate isn't going to help you take off faster but plane out easier once running

Or a yamaha 701.

Have you tried leaning over the bars to center your weight as you get into the throttle?

The more you ride I'm sure it will become easier even if you leave the ski all stock. Riding is alot of technique and if you've been out of it for a while it could be the problem. And true, it is great exercise!!

You could maybe get some 0 degree bars to move you forward slightly too. Just a thought.

Is that the new ski in the avatar?

The ride plate is to stop the porposing... The intake grate helped a little also.. The prop or impeller will play a huge role also.. I use to play around with boats with stailess props wtih pitch and size.. If I wanted top end I would sacrfice bottom end.. Did I want to go fast or pull skiers out of the water.. This has to have the same principal right?? I don't care about top end..

Yup thats the ski... It has straight bars... I'm sure your right that with more time on it it will get better.. I just remember when I was 20 what I use to do with a ski.. not really the same anymore.. The extra weight is messing everything up.. This purchase was to get a mind set to get back into shape.. Quit smoking, gain 20lbs, got rid of the x, added 20lbs..
