650/X-2 help for a heavy guy

I'm 40.. Just purchased an 89 650sx.. I bought one of these brand new.. I was in high school.. Had a couple 550 before as well.. I know how to ride.. I use to do a lot of freestyle... I was pretty good.I haven't been on a ski in 15 years. I've gained weight... Poor little ski is having a hard time getting me out of the water... It is bone stock.. No mods to the motor.. I have a J D ride plate coming.. Just added an J D Top Loader intake grate.. It has a Stainless impeller.. The ski runs out great... It just cant pull me up and out of the water.. I'm 250lbs.. It has no problem if I kneel in it to take off or even stand up when I take off from the beach.. But if I stand and spin the ski out and stand it up straight it just doesn't have the gutts to pull me out... Should I add some weight to the nose. I ordered a impeller cone nozzel from blowsion..

Any thoughts would be great.. And no I'm not going to put a bigger motor in it or buy anouther ski.. That would be way to easy.. I like my retro ski... Brings back a lot of good memories

I'm new myself on here. But alot of people mod these engines to get more power out of them.I myself would recommend putting on a bigger carb and intake your gonna need it for the bigger carb.A popular choice is a 44mm Mikuni SBN.You also needa bigger intake manifold when dropping that carb on.Other choice is a 38mm mikuni SBN I am not 100% sure but I believe the 38mm does not need a different intake manifold you just have to get it bored out fro m28mm to 38mm to match the carb.Thats one way to get more power out of it.Other than that As you already mentioned Ride Plate, and intake grate are a good upgrade.I believe some people also replaced the stock cone on the pump and put a pipe on the engine as well. Then you get into swapping different heads on for different compression ratios and so on.Bottom line to start i'd say carb and a pipe would be my first mods to get more power out of the ski.I'm in the same boat and Im currently looking for a 44 SBN.

Thanks... I'm gonna check and see what impeller it has on it before I start on the motor.. I'm not much of a mechanic so I'd like to stay away from the motor at first.. But more power is the real answer.. And a diet!!!!!

I would check that old impeller! I had issue's to, the impeller was completely worn out, damaged and almo'st split in half..

Get A good aftermarket one in it. That will help al lot. Dit the same for me, now it runs nice.

I dont know how much better it runs with an exhaust e.c. i just bought it all so i know the differance when i put the parts on :)

But cool that you bought one new in the shop !

My X2 is the same 650 dog. Didnt think I could get the power I needed from a 650 so the 1100 build starts next week. That should pull me around pretty good.

If you have a stock 28mm carb, upgrade it immediately. If you have a 38mm or larger carb, you can skip the carb and start with a pipe. Milling the head for higher compression will help.

Ultimately the problem is your riding skill. You need to practice more. My Superjet has way more power than your 650sx, and I still have problems balancing a tail stand and riding out from the nose being up. It's not the boat, it's my lack of skill. Chopping your pole may make it easier, but it may give more leverage on the nose making it harder. My opinion is that anything you can do kneeling/lying, you should be able to do standing/crouched.

I need to check the prop.. It is a new stainless.. And thats all I know.. I need to find out what is on it.. Blowsion recommended a 8/16 for my application. My chops are off as well. I know what to do but also haven't done it in 15 years or so.. It feels natural again but thats the only issue i'm having. I remember when in a tail spin to lean forward, hammer down and turn to the left or right and spin out of it...Just not happening.. I will just spin in circles for hours... ha.. getting dizzy.. Thanks for all the advice...

How's the compression? I chopped my pole -4 and it helps a lot with getting to to level out after a tail stand, time in the tray usually solves a lot of issues too though. Mod the stock exhaust, it usually helps out a bit and is a really cheap mod.
