650/X-2 HELP! Kawi 650 question

My buddy is deciding to give me his kawi 650 for a hundred bucks. He told me it needs new wiring or something, he is NOT a mechanic though lol. Hull is good and everthing else is in good condition except the motor I am guessing, realistically how much money and how hard is it to drop a new engine in it?

It is Very easy to do motor swap and takes about 15 min but only worth it if you get a pretty cheap motor. Definitly get the ski for that price but don't just go throwing parts into it hoping to fix it or you will end up over $1000 bucks real quick and the ski isn't worth close to that. Track your problem down completly then replace that part

You can easily sell a good 650sx for $1000 or more.

He told me the wiring needs to be replaced, I used to ride with him 3 years ago and it ran fine then so I don't feel like it could be that big of a problem. Am I looking at a money pit or a potential fun time? lol

Ya definitly both. I ride a 90 650sx and I take it out and have a great time with it. Just keep good maintenence on it and don't go huge into mods I just have bars, finger throttle, ride plate, pole limiting strap, and padded and turf in the bottom of tray. I will not do anything more to this ski and am going to sell it to buy a superjet before nodding big. Although if I did plan to keep it I would definitly put tubbies on it. It is a great ski to start on and get you hooked on the sport.
Where in Washington are you. I've lived there all my life till recently moving here.

If its electronics only that are bad then it may not be hard to fix at all but diagnosing electrical stuff might not come as easy. At that price its hard not to buy it. Even if the whole motor is shot you can probably get your money back easily.

Worst case scenario... You sink a couple hundred bucks and waste a lot of time but gain some wrenching and troubleshooting experience. Then if you give up completely, you can sell the pump, reduction nozzle, engine, driveshaft, through hull bearing, waterbox, and anything else someone might want and make all of your money back...if not more.

The biggest question is... Do you just want to get it and ride or do you like tinkering with things?
