I just got screwed by UPS on a hull I just purchased. The seller and I estiamted it weighed 150lbs (didnt have a scale) - but that was off. Picking it up I knew it was over 150 lbs but didnt know exactly what the weight was.

I just got an email from the freight company I used stating that it weighed 420 lbs (which seems very high) and per the terms and conditions I would be charged an additional $444 for shipping costs. That was more than I paid for the shipping to begin with!

I called the freight company back (www.freightquote.com) and they said to dispute the charge I need to provide something from the manufacture showing how much the item I shipped weighed. Looking at complaints online - it looks like I am not the first to run into this issue with freightquote

I thought I could find something online (Rickter site maybe?) showing how much a hull weighs but I cant find anything! The only weight specs for the hulls are listed on this site!

Does anyone have anythign showing how much an empty Rickter hull weighs? I just need something semi-official to argue with. Does anyone have a spec sheet on the hulls from Rickter? It seems like awhile back I saw someone with a PDF of the demensions of the hull.

I have an email out to TC Freeride, Thrust, and Rickter - no luck yet. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Oh man that sucks! Maybe link them this thread and they can see everyone say they are wrong.

Public scale with a printed slip?

i know this may seem like an obvious statement, but seems to me that they arent going off of the hull weight but the entire weight of the shipment which is hull + crate

therefore if you guys are telling them the hull is 150lbs and they get it and its 420lbs they are going to raise the price

i do agree it is complete bs that they raised that much....that seems ridiculously high to ship a hull

ps....i know that when i shipped my superfreak and kdx the shipment weight was around 375...so 420 doesnt seem that off seeing that the rickters are typically heavier

Yes, I know - I agree. But when I called freightquote that is what they were asking for. They said "send us the manufacture specs on the item you shipped."

1. A properly crated hull, even a lightweight one - and a Rickter is definitely not in that category - will tip the scales at 300lbs. I've shipped a carbon Freak and a carbon FR and both crates weighed about 300lbs.
2. The shipping company can and will adjust scale weight to take crate dimensions into account that they use to come up with an 'adjusted' weight. Both the Freak and FR I shipped had adjusted weights of nearly 400lbs. That doesn't mean it's the real weight. It's just a scalar modifier for the shipping company's billing system.
3. I don't think disputing it will get you anywhere. They have decided what you should pay and you're not going to tell them differently. Use a different shipping company if you're really not happy with their quote. (I sure as hell would not be - I've shipped across the country for right about $300)

like everybody else said, you have to take into account the total weight. A flat pallet with a cardboard box like the Ricktors come in would still top the scales at over a hundred pounds empty. A framed crate for the ski alone can weigh 200 lbs..... now add the weight of the ski to it. Your Ricktor is in the 100-125 lbs range, do not know which model you have.

Shipped in a crate. I think we have now established our estimates are off - is that fault of the shipper or buyer?

The more important thing here is - something that weighed 150 lbs cost $235 - but shipping the exact same item that weighed 420 lbs costs a total of $675.

Fault of the buyer, if you arrange shipping... You need to get the correct weights and dimensions before shipping. Every crate I have used has been between 175-225 lbs by its self

The pricing structure doesn't have to be linear. Try shipping 1lb via USPS. Now ship 100lbs and see if the price is exactly 100x the first price.
Who is at fault? Well - Honestly, whoever estimated that a hull, let alone a Rickter, has a 150lbs shipping weight was flat out wrong. But, if you've never shipped a hull before then it's an easy mistake to make.
If the buyer arranged shipping, it's unquestionably on the buyer. Otherwise, see if you can split the difference with the seller.

Ya, never shipped an empty hull before.

Lesson learned here - guess others will learn from my mistake as well.

Didnt know $600+ was common cost for shipping a hull. Ouch

I don't think it is common. Like I said, I've shipped across the country twice for approximately $300 each time, with similar weights to what you posted, since late 2012. I think you're getting f'd on that shipping price, but it's hardly the shippers fault. To get accurate quotes, you need to have accurate data.

It seems really high but I know things have changed even since I had mine shipped.

My crate was heavy as hell and my ski was still only 350 shipped.

I know the 150 was off - like I said it felt heavier. But my cousin and I still lifted the crate and hauled it from my truck to my garage. I have a hard time believeing the 420#

I just feel the additional $444 is unfair. Im willing to pay more for a heavieir load (as a mistake was made), but almost double of the original estimate seems wack.
