help! stripped bolt

trying to put a riva pipe on my 90 SJ, and stripped one of the bolts going into the head.

am I totally farked?

or can I use a helicoil and fix it that way?

BTW, will I need to re-jet or do anything with the carb when I get this thing in? I believe it's one of the old Riva "red pipes"

Is the pipe mounted directly to the head, or is there a rubber damper between the pipe mount and head? If you stripped the bolt, get a new one. If you stripped the threads in the head, heli coil it ( id do that) or drill out the threads and tap it for the next size hole, and drill the hole in your pipe for a bigger bolt.

well I goofed on the original post.
I did not strip the bolt. I stripped the hole in the cylider that the bolt goes into. It's the Riva exhaust manifold I'm bolting on right now.

farked is like f***ed, but ****ed gets pulled by the word censor.

truss me, I got Paul's number programmed in my phone. He was my first call - I think his voice mail is farked...or full

as far as the cert, how easy is that to install? I can use a 90º drill and get in there to drill out the hole for the helicoil fairly easily. Those bolts only get tightened to 22ft-lbs, so I think a coil would be sufficient.

Heli coil will probably be fine and easier, there is a tool that comes with the time cert kit. Basically after you drill and tap the oversize, you run the insert into the hole with the tool and then when you install the bolt it expands the last thread of the insert and locks it into place. Paul says you can use a bolt with a lock nut to install the time cert and then just remove the lock nut and run the bolt in to lock it in. Just be careful and drill straight or you will say fark and shart alot if you fark up your cylinder.

not girdled

it's a 6m6

I don't know that it's a red pipe - cause it's not red. It's blue, but I think cause it was powder coated by someone else.

It may also be an old freeride pipe.

Do yourself a favour and put stainless inserts in all the head threads on the cylinders. If you're like me, and pull the head regularly to check the pistons coz you can't tune for crap, you'll find that the oem alloy threads will wear out fast.

BTW...this is a common problem/occurance. I had exactly the same thing happen 6 months ago.

It's a 6m6 650, don't waste your time w/ SS inserts for the head on that cylinder!! (Penguin is working on a 701 to replace it I believe...)

Oh, and with that said, just do the helicoil, it will get you by on that 650 for now.
