SX/SXi/SXi Pro Help with Kawasaki 750 sxi

I’ve got a 750 sxi, runs well and all but has wrecked 2 starters in 2 years. I finally looked at it and found the cover plate for the stator and flywheel is covered with brown dirt stuff, the flywheel is bumpy with what appears to be rust and the burnt starters also had this brown crust. A small amount of black oil was in the case as well. I’m guessing it’s a water problem. I’ve heard of blown crank seals allowing gas oil air mix into the case as well. I’m no pro, but I’m willing to work hard and I have a general knowledge of it, just requesting advice from a someone who actually knows their sh*t about skis. Also not sure if I should pull the engine to clean this mess.

On second inspection- not oil, just blackish water that was in the case. The brown crust is definitely dirt/silt

Do you add a little silicone on a new oring for the grove on the cover? all the rubber grommets are in good shape and seal well,anywhere air and or water can get in. Is the starter sealed with silicone . Looks like the bendix might be falling apart as metal pieces will chew up a stator . I would take it apart clean,clean,clean then reassemble with new orings , gaskets ,parts , bendix etc

I didn’t think of silicone. What’s the best way to silicone the starter in? My starter is in an awful spot to take out- not looking forward to pulling one wit silicone.
When inspecting the bendix what am I looking for as wear?
Can I clean this all while in the ski or is it better to pull the engine?

replace your springs/washers/gaskets/orings/flywheel/bendix/starter/bendix bushing, seal it up and run it for another 10 years

Myself I would remove engine clean ,inspect and replace anything questionable and reassemble with new gaskets and seals. Doing in the ski may be possible but having the motor on the bench is better in the long run. Maybe find a shop manual will help . Having the bendix in your hand and examine it for missing internal pieces is all I do .I have no idea what that dried mud like residue is inside there but it looks like a tear down is order.

However maybe cleaning and sealing and reinstalling that cover properly will get you back on the water. Good luck

Thanks for all the help guys, I’ll pull it and clean it, anything that’s done I’ll replace and I’ll make sure to get new seals o ring and all. Seems like it’s just water getting in and wrecking components.
