Hooker 9/15 vs Hooker 11/17 for surf riding

I purchased a Hooker 9/15 for my SJ for surf riding. It hooked up instantly when I was at a dead idle but when I was out in the waves it seemed to be a little under pitched. After thinking about it for a while, when surf riding we are mostly at mid range speeds, as I’m at least going 10mph when I hit a wave for whatever. I decided to send my prop back to Impros and got it repitched to 11/17 and I like it much better. Any thoughts? Agree/Disagree?

I am sooo glad you made this thread John. James (SJJim over in UK) had suggested this for my sj (Solas 'Hooker' or just a normal Solas Concord 13/17), but I do not know if he was thinking about it being in surf, since we were on the lake that day. so I still haven't ordered anything. What would be best?

Suzi it all depends on your personal riding style. If you prefer to ride at a slower pace, then nail it when you hit a wave, then the lower pitch might be the ticket but if you like to carry a little speed then the higher pitch will work better. As suggested by your fellow East Coast riders then going in the middle with a 10/16 sounds like a good choice. The 9/15 was hyped a lot on this site a while back so I tried it out. For my riding style and where I ride it was to low of a pitch. I think a 9/15 would be a better flat water prop. I was mainly interested in seeing if any other surf riders had similar problems with a 9/15.

solas 13/17 is the call..no hype or silly name..it just strait up works...

get a less aggressive intake grate and you have a happy medium..slide when u want and hook up when u want...its all about weighting your rear foot...

my 9/15 hooker is the chit IMO I don't want it any other way, the ski is still as fast a my stock SXR but has LOADS of bottom end, its B-piped and head and port job n stuff but that impeller is the bomb. i don't really have a problem keeping hooked up, I also run a jet dynamics top loader

well I really didn't want to put anything called hooker on my ski to begin with...

Andrew, James had suggested a different type ride plate as you mentioned to go with it as well (can't recall what at the moment), but will retrieve the info and run it past you when I get to that point.

thanks guys

I thought the 9/15 was underpropped too but that should be a function of your motor as well. You can pitch down if you have the horsepower but if you pitch up it usually makes your engine fall on its face. I really liked the 10/16 in the surf over the 9/16 but that was on a ported 760.

When I built my Matrix, I started with a 144 skat setback pump and a 14/19 C-75. It had excellent hookup and perfect linear power right from bottom to top. In an effort to loosen the back of the ski up, I started playing with my pump and ended up trying out a Hooker 11/17 in my Mag pump. I lost off the top a bit and get a bit more cavitation but overall, the ski is more playful and improved on bottom and mid which is perfect for the surf but not ideal on flatwater.

As for flatwater performance, Tanner was trying to backflop my ski a couple weekends ago and he wasn't getting half the rotation he was when it had the 14/19 in it.
