I have a n00b question. I would like to know what program everyone is using (pc) to edit digital camera videos and put music to them. Free download is a must. Thanks!:wizard:

I know you said free download but Movie Maker is as good as most other free stuff. They all suck.

For the price of gas for a couple rides (or a few blank camcorder tapes) you can get some low cost but powerful video editing. There is Pinnacle Studio ($50) or Sony Vegas ($80). That's full price from the source. You could probably save a few bucks shopping around.

If you try and use movie maker it could drive you to giving up on video editing. Micro$oft added it to XP when they did service pack 2 because Apple added iMovie to Macintoshes just so they could say XP edits video too.

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator. I bought it for $90, and it includes stuff like being able to convert any type of video to multiple formats, including DVD TS files, a photo manager you can make slideshows with, CD burn program, DVD burn/copier(use in conjunction with any DVD copy protection removal and you can copy DVD's), you can add music, narrative, etc. to any production, and all kinds of other goodies. The interface is very user friendly. If you do a lot of video editing or plan on it, you have to get something aside from freeware.

Pinnacle studio has some great features... but it's sooo unstable...
Win Movie Maker is simple but ok.
Video editing in general isn't very stable compared to other programs you are used to running. It's a true test of how has much power your PC has and how it's running. All video editing programs like lots of RAM like at least a gig. Big SATA hard drives make a world of difference.

If you've loaded a bunch of crap on your PC over the years and/or it has some underlying instabilities they will show up. Just like finding PWC electrical problems in salt water.

If you plan a long editing session it works a lot better if you save your work if things start to slow down and restart the program. Regular saves with a new name (version numbers at the end of the name work well) each time can save a lot of pain. Rebooting every couple hours doesn't hurt either. These things take a few minutes but you get all the time back and save a lot of frustration.

Other things that help are most video editing programs don't like editing MPEG files. They open them and will let you edit them but they don't like doing it. If you are working with MPEG files open them then save them out as AVI in DV format. Then edit that file.

They also say they support a whole bunch of audio formats. They sure seem to like some better than others. It's worth the time to convert it to an audio to a format it likes better.

As always if you are having problems with things like this Google is your friend. You're probably not the first person to have that problem. There are also video forums like this.

Good luck and hopefully we will see some good stuff!

I think it's all on how it's encoded. I use medium quality for Youtube, which really degrades the quality of the original. Of course if you are using a OS ATC camera, the quality will never be decent, lol. If you have a good program that will encode in high quality AVI or DIVX, you should be able to preserve that quality.
