Super Jet How much sanding is enough? 95 sn superjet

Help. this is my first time working with glass. i am reinforcing inside the engine compartment. when i am sanding the top half above bond line, how far do i go? how can i tell?what do i look for?(surface texture).i know the layer of slopped on white paint goes. the next layer is tricky. seems to be swirled with different colors of reddish brown. when sanded it seems to gum up . does that sound right? any help would be appreciated...

i have also learned the hard way what not to do when reinforcing the tray.i clothed across the bottom and up the sides 4 inches. flipped it upside down and used a kerosine heater... 2 big mistakes. kerosine/propane heaters are a no no(manufac. web site. something about cO2 or a chemical reaction?,?,,,) upside down with heat the sides will slide down and the bottom pulled away in big patches. had to completely sand it off...oh well. live and learn.

Heat causes resin to warp. Just putting on too many layers at once can chemically create enough heat to warp as it dries. Never add more heat.

You need to sand down to bare SMC. not sure what your mystery material is, but it's not likely to be as strong a bond as glass to SMC. Obviously don't sand through the hill, but it's unlikely some putty substance replaces the SMC. You can add an extra layer of glass if you think you sanded too much, but that puddy substance probably isn't adding any strength.

My X2 has some plastic glued to the right side of the engine compartment above the bond line that was used to mount electronics. This piece would have added strength and flex. I'm not sure how the resin would bond to it, but if I were to reenforce, I'd take it all off.
