I have already chopped the top of my fx1 stock pole 3 inches. Want to cut off more now off the bottom for barrel rolls and flips. Wondering how much shorter I should go? I want it pretty damn short, but not sure how much.

Also would I have to mod my steering and throttle cables if I went very short?
Completely depends on personal preference. I'm 5 10 and when I rode a superjet my pole was -5 and probably -3 with my shortened turnplate. Now I ride a RIP with almost as short of a pole as possible.
Your fx1 pole is a -5 in terms of a pre 08 pole since fx1s are -2 standard.
Do you have aftermarket steering?
You won't have to shorten any cables. They just get tucked in the hull.

Make sure its so short the only way to ride the ski is when trying to flip or roll. If you're lower back doesn't need heat and cold for 20 minutes on/off after a 5 gal tank its not short enough.
I'm kidding, but my advice is to take an inch off at a time when you think you need it until you don't anymore. Really short flatwater skis with riders who are strictly training flatwater tricks favor very short poles. But remember its way easier to get again then put it back.

I cut 3" off my fx1 pole also but haven't had the opportunity to ride it, almost want to atleast cut another 1" off to be at -6" before I put it back together and paint. I'm sure it's going to be an improvement already so well see how it feels.

So I had already cut 3" off the top, now I cut 3.5" off the bottom for a total of almost 7" off. I think it is perfect for me, because I am doing barrell rolls, but overkill for an average rider.

I run a 26" pivot to pivot on my XFT. I'm also 6'3, talk about back pain.. If you think it's to short, it's probably not.

Just learning them in small surf. I am at about 3/4 of a roll now, but if I try it off a bigger wave I'm sure it could be plate to plate.
