300/440/550 Hull differences ease of riding

I have a 82 js 550 i have been riding since the beginning of summer and got it down pretty well. The other day I rode my friends 90 550 and it was night and day so much easier to ride. I was under the impression that the hull designs were the same except the exhaust. Does any one have any insight As to why this would be? His has an extended ride plate but I did not think they made that much of a difference.

Switch ride plates and intake grates. And see which one is easier after that.
